  • Engine problems - 4th cylinder not firing on petrol but works on LPG?

Hi guys some help would be appreciated...

Problem: 4th cylinder not working on petrol BUT works on gas. How do I know this? I plugged in the computer and when cutting fuel to the 4th cylinder it didn't make a difference. All the other cylinders caused the engine to sag.

Fuel injector problem? No. I pulled the injectors out yesterday and cleaned them, and also swapped the first cylinder injector with the 4th to make sure, But it is still having the problem with the 4th cylinder.

Because it works on LPG would mean that the spark plug and coil are fine right? So what else can it be? and why the 4th cylinder?

Need to check the injector pulse coming from the computer. Techstream or a good code reader with live stream would do this.

As lpg doesn't use the injectors it would explain it.

Thanks piggy, I have techstream but I am not expert. Does anyone know the steps to get where I can read the pulse?

Seeing that you've already swapped injectors, did you do the same with coils? Have you removed the plug from offending cylinder and inspected? I would have done those before the injectors. Just because it's running on lpg doesn't mean that they're fine. Better to start from the basics before jumping the gun, diagnostics is a process of elimination. Are you getting any DTCs from the computer?

Yeah Sunny I checked all that first thanks. I took the whole loom apart and found what looked like a short which I fixed but didn't fix the problem. It ended up being the GAS ECU that was causing the error. To work this out I connected up that cylinders injector straight to the Petrol ECU and it worked fine. So since the GAS ECU cuts the line and runs it through itself so it can switch between LPG / Petrol it pretty much meant it was causing the problem. Not sure how this happened.
When I did buy another Prins ECU ($700 later) I put it in and it all worked fine, until I booted the car to overtake someone and the whole gas system shut down automatically then switching to petrol. Luckily it had only blew the fuse and I changed it and ran it again hard to confirm that hammering it was causing it to blow. I had to drive all the way to Sunshine (2 hours) to the prins guys (who are very helpful) and they changed the computer over again and after hammering it during test runs it was all good. So another faulty computer. The prins guys said that that was a first.

          Anyway car runs great now.

Just to note also that the 120 series does not have the intelligence in the ECU to show the pulse stream, it can only shut off cylinders.
