  • 2nd Gear underpowered after shift from 1st- manual 2003 TDiesel

OK, I'm quite ignorant of transmissions, but my manual 2003 Turbodiesel seems to have a extra large difference (ratio?) between 1st and 2nd gear.

I get the turbo boost in 1st gear, shift to 2nd and then it feels underpowered takes forever (relatively) to get into the turbo band. I noticed (and posted) about this especially when driving in the sand, that I stayed in 1st (I was in HL) most of the time, getting up to almost 4k RPM instead of shifting to 2nd unless I was on a flat. Any incline and it wasn't worth making the shift.

I never did it in the sand, but on the street 2nd to 3rd, 3rd to 4th are seem adequately powered.

I'll add that I bought this 2003 3.0TDiesel manual 5-door a year and a half ago. It only had one-owner and 60,000km on the clock. The previous owner lived in the USA and left this garaged and used it to drive 1,000km to where he grew up 1 or 2x a year (hence the low mileage) and then back to the garage.

Maybe there could be an issue with the Turbo? I recently changed the (dirty) air filter but the same issue remains. Although my hunch is the gear because it seems to have good pickup in all the other gears.

Anyone else feel this way? I imagine it's all about gear ratios and that you could change it if you really wanted to. Is that practical? 2nd gear is an important gear in the city and on the sand.

    Thanks.

What type of rev drop does each gear have?

Eg if at 2500 in 1, going to 2 drops it to?, at 2500 in 2 going to 3 drops it to? And same again. It's usually a pretty smooth ratio eg a 500 rev drop per gear across the whole range.

How is the power in general? May want to log the ECU, could also be blocked MAP sensor filter.

Yes, I did the rev drop a while ago but forgot the numbers. I'll do again. And log the ECU.

I apologize for slow response... to my own post!

The RPM drop is more than 1,000, from 3,000 to 1,800 when shifting from 1st to 2nd. Most of the time it seems around 500-700 between the other gears.

Hello again, I'm still wondering about this, hopefully someone knows a little bit about manual transmissions could help me out. I'm looking to do a long drive and would like everything up to snuff.

I admit I did not do the ECU check (as suggested) as the truck is peppy (for a diesel) in all the other gears.
