  • 120 Grande To buy or not?

Hi, Am in the process of buying a 2007 (upgraded) prado grande car has done just under 200ks. I have test driven the car and also did a State road inspection, the mechanic who did the inspection stated a few things about the car,

The Automatic Transmission Oil Condition: Requires Service.

Front Brake pads are worn low and will need replacing/servicing including disc rotors as required. Light Brake shudder caused by disc rotor warpage- will need disc rotors machined/replaced to rectify.

Thump at transmission when pulling up at times, will need further investigator/service. I Believe it's the tail shaft problem commonly seen on prado and other Toyota vehicles, but this car has done nearly 200ks and this confuses me as most people here have had the issue sorted by itself after reaching high kms.

Traction control lights come on when driving - Will need further investigation/repairs.

Rear third row headrests are missing.

The car has few(110k to 170k) missing service record. there are few more things like missing spare wheel cover etc which am not worried about.

The car was at the workshop getting roadworthy done at the time of inspection and the state-road guy said that the ABS lights could be because of them (workshop guys) servicing the abs? or breaks.

Now to give you an overview, I test drove 3 grandes so far and this was the Best one among them the price is not cheap, in fact it's almost 4 or 5 k more expensive than the other ones i test drove.
From all the conversation i have had with the seller, i Think they will get a roadworthy and that's about it- so Ive got a feeling that the drive line issues may not be sorted but its still at the workshop getting things done.

Also forgot to mention that I will be driving this car to Darwin (from Melbourne) in a week time (if i end up getting this) and My wife will be using it for few months there. will will bring the car back to VIC by end of this year.

I have attached a few pics from the inspection report.

I would like to hear your opinion on this car. is it worth getting it?

    Thanks

the thump could be engine mounts
      have the injectors been replaced?
      is the egr clean?
when is it due for a service? have that done and inspect the oil strainer through the sump plug hole to see if there is any crud on the oil pick up/strainer
have a look at the air bags to see what condition they are in
check the front wheel bearings ( looks quite dirty in that area, could be brake dust)

just a few things i can suggest !!

        Thanks for your response.

As per log book, last service was done at yarra valley Toyota, Car has done roughly 3k after this service.

        have the injectors been replaced?

No sure about this, will look into it. As per the mechanics report, "No Engine bay oil leakage found at time of engine bay inspection. Engine runs and sounds good also showing no internal running faults. Diagnostic scan shows no faults with engine electrical programs"

Airbags, I have checked the air bag while TD, AFAIK, it works fine, as in the rear of the car lifts up and holds its position without any issues while parked. it self levels alright too, unfortunately the stateroads report not mentions anything about airbags. I may have to take the car to a toyota service centre or something as am no expert on this, i did a leak test by spraying water over air bags and other than making me look stupid in front of others, couldn't find out much..

check the front wheel bearings again not sure, the state-road guy did this and as per his report, Driveline is showing no major wear or fluid leaks at the time of inspection showing typical wear for age.

i had to do my wheel bearings on the front after 90K , previous owner had done a few water xings
i would like to get the injectors & sump screen checked by some one that KNOW what they are doing !!
to fix the injectors is around $3-$3.5k, wheel bearings are not to bad
as your in Vic you could take it to Anthony and he will sort it after you get it !!

            Is this the V6?

The middle 3rd row headrest is in the zipper compartment behind the 3rd row driver's side seat.

Yes its a v6, I too think the headrests are in the 3rd row pocket, when i did the TD thee 3rd row was not installed and the seller said that they never had the 3rd row installed. May be the Mechanic who did the inspection did not look inside the pocket...

Whats the tail shaft costs like for a 120 ? Is there any difference across the variants? Also a DBA front rotor and bendix pad wont be too expensive i guess.

If I end up buying this car thats the two things i will have to do....

Youll do all the repairs for well under $1k. Allow $350-450 for the brakes. Tailshaft you can try greasing splines, usually fixes them, if not an emery buff cleans the splines up and re-grease.

Id be more concerned about the traction light you said was on?

Did the mechanic throw a code reader over it?
