  • maximum weight on the roof

    hello

i am ronny from germany. i drive a prado 150. i want to buy a roof top tent an a awning. maybe both from alu cab. but my problem is the weight. toyota says bot more as 75kg on the roof. this is not much.
often i see videos from guys with 100l diesel, a awning, tent and so on the roof.

what you think? is 100kg on the roof too much?

    Ronny

If you remove the factory rails and bolt a rhino rack (or similar) platform or bars directly to the roof the weight limit goes up to 100kg. A roof top tent + bars + awning can be under that.

The roof can take more weight than 100kg e.g. you add the weight of two people when sleeping in the roof top tent. The limit is there to keep the centre of gravity low while driving. Lots of people ignore the limit though and run the risk of insurance denying a claim if the extra weight contributed to a crash.

There's some good info in this thread: http://www.pradopoint.com.au/showthr...7229-Roof-rack

      Hey Malloc,

Do you have any sources quoting the increase to 100kg if you mount to the roof? My handbook does not mention this and I cant find anything credible that confirms this. Although it makes sense.

For the Prado fit-out, the backbone and Pioneer Platform deliver a maximum on-road vehicle allowance of 120kg, while offering a staggering static roof allowance of 360kg and off-road allowance of 96kg. This adds an extra 20kg allowance from the factory rail's on-road allowance of 100kg.

          Hi Piggy,

          Thanks for jumping in.

So that article references the 120, I cant say I'm certain whether the numbers of roof load are consistent with a 150 (which is what I have). Where my head is at is that the 96kg rhino pionner offroad rating will need to be reduced by 30(ish)kgs as this is the weight of the rhino platform (approx), bringing total roof load to 66(ish)kg?

I decided to go for the ARB base rack, which, based on the size of the rack I'm installing, gets me a rating of 150kg. This now means that my lowest common denominator is the actual car roof limit...which my handbook states 85kg on the rails. Now the ARB baser ack requires the rails to be removed, which means in theory, applying the logic from the link you referenced, should give me more "legal" roof carrying capacity. This is the number that I cant seem to find. That if you remove the rails on the 150 prado, what becomes of the total roof limit?

I'm not trying to max this limit out by any means. Based on the fact the ARB baserack is roughly 21kg, this now gives me 64(ish)kg of cargo. But if we're now saying that the roof limit increases as we're not installing on the rails, assuming a 100kg limit, that means 79kg is theoretically possible...

So what happens to the 150 prado roof limit if the rails are removed?
