  • Lift needed for the border track in June?

I'm thinking of doing a trip down the border track with some friends on the June long weekend. The exact route is still to be worked out but it'll be roughly from Pinaroo to Border Town.

Has anyone done it around that time of year? Any idea if it'll be too wet? I've seen some photos of some seriously big holes, not sure if those sections are still open.

I also don't have a lift and probably won't by that date. Do you think I'll have trouble with the OEM suspension? I'll be travelling light but will still have a fair bit of weight from dual batteries, bar etc.

Any advice from people who've done it before would be appreciated!

    Cheers

I did it a year ago in a standard Amarok. No lift nothing.

Just avoid the big mud holes (they have bypasses).

Agree with Piggy. No lift required. Did it in the pouring rain and even then there were dry bypasses to the mud holes.

          Hi Malloc
The Border Track mostly consists of sandy ridges which can be quite deeply rutted.
There is also heavy flats when wet and "woopdy doo's" for long stretches.
Then toward the Southern end past Red Bluff is the clay pits (Big Mud Holes) to be avoided, via bypasses.
No doubt you will be reducing your tyre pressure to suit the conditions and traveling at a sensible speed to be sympathetic to your OEM suspension.
Radio communication with your travelling party is a must, even a check on scan every now and then to be aware of what else is on the track.
You will enjoy the Border Track, Good Luck and don't forget the trip report..
          Cheers

Thanks foxclan, yep, tire pressure will be down, I'll be taking it easy, and everyone on the trip has radios.

I'll make sure I take some pics for a trip report

We finished the border track this weekend - you definitely don't need a lift. Travelled from pine hut soak camp ground down the full length of the park and back to the highway along Shaugh Track.

Didn't need to use any of the bypasses. With low range + centre diff lock we cruised up dunes where plenty of other people were getting stuck, it almost felt too easy

Trip report coming once I get photos sorted out.

I did the trip solo in may this year and you don't need lift to complete it. The track main track (ie not the bog holes at the end) is apparently easier during the winter months as the sand is packed down by the rain. Just drop your tire pressures and keep your foot down during the trickier climbs and you should be okay.

It is a great track and definitely want to do it again sometime

                      Nice photos RNZ2016.

The deep bog holes you see in some pics had all been filled in and fenced off when I went through. Only a couple of smaller ones were left.
