  • Simo with 3 kids July School Hols 2017

This winter we are going to brave a trip through the Simpson with 3 kids (3, 11 and 13). In support will by my Dad in a stock Amarok (along with mum and my sisters - they had a Fear Of Missing Out) and a mate in a well setup Triton with his wife and 2 kids. Starting from Melbourne, we're going via Port Augusta to Ayers Rock, then back through Finke, Mt Dare, Dalhousie to Birdsville via French Line, Cameron Corner and Broken Hill. Hopefully there will be less rain than winter 2016!

Stay tuned for the trip report.

Enjoy it! I've only been home a week and want to go do it again. Let me know if you need any pointers / info for the trip.

We're doing ayers rock and the simpson on the way back from the GTG. Should be a similar time although we might be a smidge earlier. We'll be at dalhousie springs on the night of Monday 26th June. I'll try and post up some conditions for you if we get out before you get in.

Heading off tomorrow... ended up getting 3 other cars coming, so will be doing WAA Line instead of French Line - should be less traffic.

Got back home on schedule after a great 2 and a bit weeks. Glad we popped up to Uluru for a couple of days, as it gave the initial crowds a chance to subside - there was talk of a 3km queue to fill up at Mt Dare a few days before we arrived.

Lambert Centre was a nice place to camp and only one other group there that night.

Dalhousie was pretty full (we pre-booked, but nobody checked bookings) and I wouldn't bother camping there again. Sure, pop in and go for a swim, but then head to Purni Bore to camp and have a camp fire. We found some muddy patches between Dalhousie and Purni and added some 'paint protection'.

The day we set out, 2 groups of 7+ also headed out, and we were hitting a bit of oncoming traffic (Big Red Bash leftovers) so we took WAA line and found it much quieter. Camped on WAA that night and had a dingo keep us company. Next day we made it halfway along Knolls track and camped.

From Knolls, the French Line was a good challenge. The Amarok got stuck in soft sand once, but the driver learned to use more right foot. We helped out a couple traveling on their own (2nd time they had been extracted that day) with a complex snatch using 3 straps. The guy didn't put anything in between the straps to stop them knotting, and did the U-bolts up very tight, so I'm guessing his off road experience was low - maybe they missed a turn somewhere? Next night was a camp in QLD not far past Poppels Corner. Again, a friendly dingo popped by.

Next morning a Hilux appeared over a dune un-announced and I waved my handheld UHF at them - 'we don't have a radio' said the (Aussie) bloke. They had 5 people on board, no other car with them, no UHF and were setting off into the desert... Onwards to Big Red, where we had a bit of lunch and watched everyone trying to get over. A lot of failed attempts made me worry a little, but the Prado made it over first try, as did the Amarok. The 2 manual Tritons had to get the gears right, and found 3rd low was the winner.

The road out of Birdsville is rough, and it was a long day to Innamincka, but the Cooper Creek Homestay was a nice oasis with great hospitality and cold beer.

From Innamincka, we took Old Strez to Cameron Corner and on to Tibooburra. Down the Silver City Hwy to Broken Hill and then out to Eldee Station just north of Silverton - lots of suicidal wildlife in this part of the world and we saw a Prado in Broken Hill that is likely a write off (no bull bar, punctured radiator and the driver kept on going - might not have had an option, if it happened in a remote are with no reception).

Eldee Station was where we finally got some good views of the stars, with the moon rising late.

Bit of trick photography in this one - I held my finger over the lower part of the lens for 25 seconds

            Some advice:
            1. 3rd party stuff will break. Kings rooftop bags are rubbish. Kings LED camp lights will eventually short (amazing someone had a glass fuse in our party). Tritons are not designed to take a roof rack - pop-rivets and corrugations are not friends (a strap through the windows held it together for the rest of the trip). Rhino antenna bracket is not strong enough for the mandatory flag and will bend (saw it over and over again).
            2. Fill up your water tanks at home - nothing like having Melbourne Water on tap to refill drink bottles. We used all 50L over 10 days and refilled in Birdsville
            3. Use paper plates for meals, then throw them on the fire - saves on washing up time and water.
            4. It gets cold, so invest in good sleeping bags (-8C was about right) and thermals
            5. Take a handheld UHF in addition to the vehicle mounted one, and use it for CH10 comms to announce your group size, direction, track and when cresting dunes
            6. Don't travel alone, even though it might be school holidays and there a lots of people around, you just become a burden on other groups when you get stuck and set their schedules back.
