  • Selling Troopy to buy Prado

I bought a late model Troopy last year and i like it but now i wish i i got a Prado instead. Fuel economy is my main problem with the Troopy among other things.

    Huh?
    " I bought a late a Troopy"
    I don't follow.

    A Troopy is a very different vehicle...of course...you are comparing a V8 with a 4 cyl diesel ?
and anyway, I wonder if many folk really care about Fuel economy in Tasmania?...most folk don't drive too far in Tassie anyway... Tasmanian's drive, on average, just over 11,000 km per year, the lowest distance on average of any state in Australia ....(i drive almost 50,000 km per year...)
So...anyway...what fuel economy are you getting in the Troopy?
Also, given the usual short commuting distances in Tasmania, I would be wary about getting a late model diesel (with DPF), I'd be more inclined to get a petrol...but anyway...just a comment.

Hi, thanks for the reply, that was a typo. I meant to say late model. I got the Troopy for touring around the country not just Tasmania. Im getting about 12L/ 100km. I believe the new Prado will use about 8L/100km.This is a significant saving on fuel. I have heard about DPF. Is that a common problem on new diesel engines?

        ah,no worries Offgrid.
12 /100KM for a Troopy is actually not that bad I recon. I'm on my second diesel Prado, and yes, I did get around 8L /100km...after they were "run in" and before any modications....but once you do a few mods and/or carry a load or tow anything you don't get 8L/100km (as I am sure you know) ..and I'm talking about real mileage, (not mileage from the display.)
You can see my modifications in my signature, and without any load I now get about 10L /100 km, and on a recent trip with the car fully loaded and a 750 kg camper trailer I got around 13L/100km. (The average on the dash display showed 10.1 L/100km ...but the actual mileage for the trip was indeed 13L/100km)....whereas you might just find that the mileage of the Troopy might not increase proportionally as much when you load it up or tow something. ...just a comment.

As for the DPF, I have a relative who lives in Tassie, and I have strongly advised him to steer clear of a new diesel with a DPF as he does lots of short trips and lots of school and shopping trips, and that can be problematic for those vehicles with a Diesel Particulate Filter, as the engine doesn't often get to full temp, and DPF burn cycles can get cut short and the DPF can clog up...costing lots of money.

Anyway, I guess I'm saying I wouldn't necessarily change to a Prado based on mileage....and dont forget the Prado has a 2.5T towing limit, and i'd look at the tare, GVM, GCM etc, and you may find you are better off with the Troopy...just saying that's all.

Thats an interesting point you make there. So you are saying because the Troopy has has a more powerful engine, the weight won't put as much strain on the engine and therefor less difference in full consumption.
