  • Stereo odd purple wire

I'm in the process of upgrading the factory 6 stacker in my 2007 GXL with a Kenwood DDX 917WS and adding a reverse camera etc. So far so good, except the steering wheel control connector on the Kenwood is a 28 pin and the factory connector is a 20 pin. So i believe i need adapters PZQ60-00141 & PZQ60-00161 from Toyota.

One weird thing is on the Toyota's 20 pin connector for the steering wheel controls is a purple wire that looks like it's been hacked in, runs off behind the glove box. I noticed it a few month ago when i done the cabin air filter because the filter almost caught on it.

Does anyone know what it's for?

Below is the Kenwood connector, it only has 3 wires so does anyone know what this 4th purple wire is for and what i do with it since the Kenwood only uses 3 wires?

It could be but i'm not so sure, it doesnt go near the handbrake. It runs from the 20 pin steering wheel control plug, behind the glovebox and down towards the passenger kick panel.

I'm wondering if it's some sort of radio signal amplifier but why that would be on the steering wheel control plug makes no sense.

From memory the radio signal booster wire was blue but its been awhile. When you say hacked in do you mean 3rd party spliced? Has a 3rd party system been previously installed do you think? Could be that they were using the 12v on the loom to enable "handbrake was on signal" (equivalent to being stopped) which would allow video playback etc.

That colour wire (purple with red dots and white strip down the side) is for the speed sensor signal. Whether it was actually used for that or the previous owner used it because that was one he had laying around is the question.

It doesnt appear the stereo has ever been pulled out, and i believe the wire was done by Toyota because it plugs in to the factory stereo via the SWC connector. It just looks hacked in like an afterthought by Toyo, all the other wires are generally in a loom, padded with foam, secured with clips etc and routed properly but not this one.

It's the purple wire with white stripe and red bands. It just runs off on it's own behind the glove box towards the passenger kick panel, it's not secured and you can see it when changing the cabin/pollen filter behind the glove box.

Speed sensor signal? So if that's the case it wouldnt of been used on the standard 6 disc stacker, and only used on Prado's with a factory GPS head unit?

Yes, however, this same purple wire is supplied with a genuine reverse camera harness to plug in a genuine reverse camera to a genuine head unit with a screen capable of displaying the image but is a non-satnav model. The wire isn't used in that instance so the previous owner may have repurposed it.

The bottom one labelled "Steering Remote" is what come with the Kenwood, it doesnt use the purple wire. In this PZQ60-00141 adapter the purple wire runs from the 28 to 20 pin plug, splits off to a 5 pin plug and splits off to a longer purple wire with a connector to splice in to crimp on to another wire.

After numerous hours of trying different things the steering wheel controls still wont work, and the radio reception is quite poor. At this stage i think i will just remove the Kenwood and put the old OEM stereo back in because i mostly listen to the radio and use the steering wheel controls a lot.

So if you are looking at the Kenwood DDX 917WS or DDX916WS you will have some issues to deal with.

Edit: Pulled the Kenwood out and put the OEM radio back in, the steering wheel controls work fine again and the radio reception is much better.

For the signal issue you need to make sure the antenna booster is powered. I had this issue when I installed an aftermarket unit in my old 120 series.

                        Hi LowRange,

I've just installed exactly the same head unit (DDX917WS) in my 2009 120 GXL.

I can confirm what cuda said, the antenna booster is the single black wire mounted at the top rear of the left bracket and without this connected the radio signal is terrible.

                        For the Steering Controls,

It appears the small patch harness in your first pic with the purple wire was definitely an after thought by Toyo, it's in my 120 too but connected just below the head unit at the Air Con harness (with a scotch-lock??). Assuming it's picking up 12V or something but it's not required for the new head unit. I removed the patch harness and disconnected the purple wire.

To tidy up the install I cut the patch harness in half, kept the end that connects to the OEM harness and discarded the rest.

Then, I cut the 28pin plug off the supplied Kenwood Steering Control harness and connected (soldered) the 20pin connector from the patch harness as follows:

                        - White from patch harness to Purple of Kenwood harness (Input 2)
                        - Red from patch harness to Green of Kenwood harness (Input 1)
                        - Black from patch harness to Grey of Kenwood harness (Steering Remote Ground)

The steering controls won't work until you power up the system and follow the instructions on page 60, "Learning function of steering remote". You have several options for button configuration, it's up to you.

                        Hope this helps.

Hi Brett, welcome to PradoPoint and awesome first post!

Thank you so much, this helps big time. I removed the Kenwood and put the factory 6 stacker back in, and with surgery the other week having another shot at installing the stereo has not been possible yet.

But the info you have just provided is gold, and is going to make getting it all working a much simpler task. I cant thank you enough for your help.

I too was wondering WTF that cable was for... had a 07 GX and recently upgraded to 09 GXL and replaced head unit from 1 to the other. Purple wire not in the GX and yes definitely looks like an afterthought!
Glad I found and answer to what it does and confirmed it's of no use to me!!
