I can confirm what cuda said, the antenna booster is the single black wire mounted at the top rear of the left bracket and without this connected the radio signal is terrible.

For the Steering Controls,

It appears the small patch harness in your first pic with the purple wire was definitely an after thought by Toyo, it's in my 120 too but connected just below the head unit at the Air Con harness (with a scotch-lock??). Assuming it's picking up 12V or something but it's not required for the new head unit. I removed the patch harness and disconnected the purple wire.

To tidy up the install I cut the patch harness in half, kept the end that connects to the OEM harness and discarded the rest.

Then, I cut the 28pin plug off the supplied Kenwood Steering Control harness and connected (soldered) the 20pin connector from the patch harness as follows:

- White from patch harness to Purple of Kenwood harness (Input 2)
- Red from patch harness to Green of Kenwood harness (Input 1)
- Black from patch harness to Grey of Kenwood harness (Steering Remote Ground)

The steering controls won't work until you power up the system and follow the instructions on page 60, "Learning function of steering remote". You have several options for button configuration, it's up to you.

Hope this helps.

I recently installed a Kenwood DDX717WBT into my 120 Prado. The reason for selecting this model was due to being the larger 200mm width which fits into the factory location without spacers or needing a replacement fascia. The purple wire was not needed and tucked away without connection in my install. One pitfall that took me a little time to work out was getting the remote steering controls to be recognised. Connection is simple ( 3 wire ) but the key is to make sure you have connected the parking wire correctly or at least make sure it is temporarily grounded before trying to initialise the remote steering (In Menu Settings). Likewise, testing camera operations and some other system settings will not be permitted unless the unit thinks you are stationary with the handbrake on.

I guess the lesson for me was to carefully read the instructions. The first clue for me (after 3 rewiring attempts) was the instructions stating "You can only register/change functions while you are parked"

Hope this helps.

G'day all.
Installed a kenwood ddx4015bt in the prado yesterday, everything working a dream, except for the steering controls. I found a diagram, and some info on here about the white/red/black wires being the steering control wires, so I connected them as above (also matches the other source I found). The head unit recognises the steering wheel buttons during set up, set up the buttons, but once done, they do nothing. I can go back into the setup and change them, so it is still recieving the signal, but not doing anything once set up. Any ideas?

Just working out my stereo wires now, for a Pioneer unit and this ones definitely unique/stand alone for some reason.

Do we know what this wire is, there are mixed opinions in this older thread and my wire is spliced into the old stereo "reverse" wire! And the camera came on when in reverse ok.. might have to do some multi meter testing if no one knows

dds it was working for the reverse came though, maybe the speedo wire does something similar electrically when you go into reverse?? See this photo.. I'm going to try connect up the new unit soon might be some trial and error if this is the case

dds , much appreciated mate. I put my unit in today, powered it up and matching your wire colours but something went wrong and now I can't get it to turn on at all..?!

I had another thread with the details see the below link but still scratching my head as to what I have done? Perhaps bumped something along the way but with power on the red/black I'm stumped. https://www.pradopoint.com.au/forum/...eo-wiring-help

OK, so finalised my install and that wire in question for me was the reverse camera sensor (2007 GXL Diesel auto), not sure if previous owner re-purposed as there was a cheapo stereo in the car but in case it helps someone this wire for me went to 13v when in reverse gear.

thanks for the information here. Helped a lot

To confirm - in 2007 Prado 120 GXL D4D - the purple wire is for the VSS (vehicle speed sensor)
