  • D-4D cutting out. Any ideas?

    There's a potential that I could snap up a bargain 2006 120 D-4D. It's got 184k on it and it's an LC5 manual.

The chap says it keeps cutting out on him at idle, at lights, when starting (hot or cold).

It has been to Toyota and they've just replaced 2 injectors as they were out of tolerance, new EGR and new fuel filters. There was carbon buildup in the intake and related components which they've cleaned too.

The car, after this work is still cutting out. Toyota believe it may be the high pressure fuel pump.

Any thoughts of what it could be? My initial thoughts are one or a combination of:

    High pressure pump
    Dirty/faulty MAF
    CPS faulty
    Cracked common rail

I currently have the same issue. Toyota Service Centre in SA said injectors were the problem, and replaced at a cost of $4000.
Problem still remains. I went to Cooma Diesel, who told me fuel was quite contaminated (gave me a sample) and said correct solution is to replace complete fuel system (approx $K10). Local Toyota (Canberra) say to replace Suction Control Valves. I now have the fuel filter light on, indicating dirty filter. Also, the Fuel Pump logged a code the other day (for the first time).
Cooma Diesel also say the injectors will likely need to be replaced AGAIN. I am in discussion with the service centre in SA about the fact I am now advised to replace the injectors - which they just installed 5 months ago.
I am of the view that the service centre in SA mis-diagnosed the issue as (only) the fuel injectors, when the root issue was dirty fuel - the result of which would be re-stuffing up the injectors. I hate cars.
