  • Pirelli Scorpian ATR - reviews?

My 2.8L GXL will be due for new boots soon. Considering my options, looking for an all terrain tyre.
95% of my driving is city driving and touring, towing a caravan. But when Im away, Im always driving on the beach or sand dunes on WA.
Also a few gravel tracks. Very rarely, a rocky type track on the way to a beach.

Im looking for an AT with the best road manners. I want to stop and corner well in the wet on the school run, as well as at 100km/h when I have 2ton of van behind me.

Initially I was looking at the D697 in LT. I was planning to go up a bit in size on the OEM 17" rims, but they don't do a 265/70, only a 275/65 in the LT (rated 118S). (Anyone fitted this size?)

However reading other website reviews of the Pirelli Scorpion ATR, these seem to be a well regarded all terrain with great road focus. And the do a LT265/70/17 - rated 121S

Does anyone have experience with the scorpions?

    Cheers

    Hi Mate

Yes I have the 265/65/17 Scorpions. Had them about 1.5 years ?? Have done about 20k km's so far. I bought them after reading various reviews and leaned towards the more road orientated focus. Like you, most of my driving is around town, however, since getting them we have been to Ningaloo, Shark Bay, down south and various other places. I have towed a 2t boat and 2t camper with them on across soft beach sand, some mud and rocks (including 3 Bears track at Yallingup). So far no issues at all, except for two screws that i got on the roads around home !! They are very quiet and efficient on road but equally comfortable off i have found. The only criticism I have so far, is that the shoulders are wearing rather quickly, however, they are probably a softer compound tyre than others and i do tend to drive the bus like a sports car not a 4wd around town so a lot of that is probably my fault. Have been with mates camping that have the BFG AT's in a LT, i do get a little envious and have considered switching, however that is more a desire than a need, although i would feel more 'comfortable' with the more aggressive tread pattern and thicker tread blocks under the bus. But again, given the conditions they have been through, no dramas at all so far. I believe that they won overall in an AT tyre review done by 4WD Action magazine some time back. For the amount of off road to city driving, i think they are a really good choice and certainly have proven to be quite capable off road. I would probably go the BFG's next time, but only because some of the rocky station tracks we end up in up north can be pretty nasty and it would make me feel more relaxed. If i knew I was only ever going to do beach sand, dunes and gravel, then i would be quite happy to stay with the Scorpions

      Excellent tyres

I fitted Pirelli Scorpion ATR LT tyres in the 265/70R17 size on my 2014 Toyota Prado VX diesel.

Very good tyres and use them on road and off road.

Done 44,000km and plenty life left in them.

Bought those Pirellis from Kogarah Tyrepower in Sydney, great service and prices.

I've had 2 sets of Scorpions now. The first set did 80000km and this 2nd set have just done the Oodnadatta Track and the Plenty Highway and never had a flat tyre. They are great in the wet as mentioned by someone else. Recommended.
