  • UHF radio placement

Any thoughts on the best location to put a UHF radio in a 150 GXL and which models to choose?

I have a uniden UH 8060NB and have the unit mounted in the spot where the card holder goes in the glovebox. Mic is mounted on the side of the centre console.

If you buy one of the remote head units there are a number of places to place the main unit out of sight. I have an Icom 440 and have the box mounted behind the passenger side kick panel - if you search there are some threads on here with photos showing the location.

BTW, if you do get a remote head unit I'd recommend one which has the microphone AND the speaker in the handpiece. Only the Icom one used to have this but I think GME and others have now brought out the same feature.

GME have a remote one as well - prestige.net for a combo pack including two antennae for different uses. I've got the speaker-mic between the instrument binnacle and the radio stack, with the unit itself tucked down behind the plastic where your left knee is. Just make sure you clear the airbag deployment area. Wires directly up through an individual grommet you can feed all the cables through. I've got a mount for the roof and the bar - bar is the 9dB for long distance touring whereas the roof holds the 3db stubby one for more mountainous areas. Just move the cable to suit the trip...

I got the Uniden 8080 and put the unit in the card holder area and Mic is on a 'Hold My Phone' mount beside the cubby under the HVAC controls. The in-mic speakers are not great, so I have an external speaker on another 'Hold My Phone' on the opposite side. Then GME released the BlueTooth compatible jobby... Pretty nice piece of kit.

I have a GME TX3350 which I got from ryda.com (ultimate value pack, comes with antenna base and 2 x fibreglass whips). As per the UH8060NB, all controls + speaker are in the mic.

I have mounted it in the same place as JimmyC. That card holder is totally useless and relatively easy to remove. The radio fits perfectly in the gap left behind.

Had my ICOM 450 installed last week. Unit hidden in space behind aircon controls. Antenna cable runs up A pillar and exits at roof rail foot. Bought a clicon bracket for the mic. Loud and clear (even for this half - deaf old git). Neatly installed in southern sydney by Glen Attard, the very professional 12-volt guy.

Thanks I'm thinking of getting the TX3350 pack. Would you have a pick showing the mic location and how the cable comes from the glove box?

Actually I ran out of time when doing the initial install and still have not gotten around to installing the Mic properly. At the moment it's just a loose cable coming out the back of the glovebox, under the rubber mat and I have the Mic itself sitting in the center console.

When I get round to finishing the job, my plan is to feed the cable around to the drivers side along the firewall and then stick the mic mount on the driver's side of the centre console (near where your left thigh would be when driving the car).

That radio comes with a nice long extension cable for the mic which will easily reach around.
