  • 1KD Powered Up!!

    Hi All

    After owning my 2008 prado since new it was time to extract some power out of it.

    Mods consist of the following
    Upgrades as follows:
    - S2 GTurbo
    - 30% injectors (1KD)
    - 3" exhaust
    - GTurbo custom ECU tune
    - Front mount intercooler (This was a bit of a task to complete)
    - 4" stainless snorkel
    - Custom airbox

    Very happy with the result. Smooth and very responsive

    Results are - 156.5kW and 530Nm at wheels in 4WD - 70% power and 58% torque increase. 33" M/T tyres

      Sounds like something for a SUBARU WRX STI.
      That would be nice to drive.
      Have you heard about the 1kd piston crack?
      May chuck a set of 110 or other upgraded pistons too.

        That upgrade might end up not all it's cracked up to be... Groan

          Hey Adrian5800

          Rough figure was $8K. Most of the cost was due to the intercooler piping and FMIC as there is not an off the shelf kit for the 1KD model. To do it all again with what I know now would be around the $7K mark. Was contemplating an upgrade to a 200 series but for the same power now for the fraction of the outlay speaks for itself.

              Have you fitted any instrumentation, EGT, boost, coolant temp?
              With all that extra tune, you may have just pulled the trigger on a 1KD-I.E.D.
              I hope it all goes well, don't wish to read about another blown (no pun intended) 1KD.

                  No issues withe the clutch on both dyno run and road. I reckon i would be wanting a heavy duty clutch around the 180rkw mark..

                        I forgot to mention, do you do any serious towing with it? Only reason I ask is that someone else on here had a wild tune and it started throwing fault codes when it was pushed when fully loaded; don't want to spoil a big trip!
                        Things change when you are pushing it in 40C heat, EGTs rise a lot quicker than most people imagine (me included). It was an eye-opener when I fitted up the gauges!

                          I haven't towed with it yet. I do own a camper trailer and when fully loaded is approx 1900kg. Only came out of the shop on Friday so haven't towed with it as yet.

                            To be honest i have never driven a 200 series so i can't compare. Currently the prado hits boost at 1800rpm and is just so smooth and responsive. Its a totally different vehicle to standard. Graeme from Gturbo knows his stuff when it comes to 1KD engines..
