  • Dump Pipe Question

    Hi,

I'm looking to upgrade my exhaust to get a bit more power when towing. Looking at pictures of systems there appears to be two different dump pipe setups. 3" pipe onto the turbo flange and secondly a smaller pipe (2.75" I think) onto the turbo flange which then expands up to 3" about 300mm back from the turbo.

Does this make much of a difference? I'm hoping not to lose bottom end torque through the upgrade. I may end up getting the system fabricated from scratch with 2.75" pipe and mandrel bends to get around this.

    Thanks,

    Hi gxl_d4d

Theory is to get the hot exhaust gases out as fast as possible with no restrictions. IMO 3" straight through is the better option. I have the Domin8tr exhaust system from 4wd supercenter and can't fault it. Have a look at my post under modifications (1KD power up) with the engine/turbo work that I have had done. 156.5kw at the wheels and no issues with my exhaust system. Standard at the wheels is 92kw.

      Hi shanders
      Did you fit it yourself.
I am looking to buy one as my system has a bit of damage.

What were the nuts holding the dump pipe to turbo like to get off.

      Thanks
      Mike

        Hi Mike

Yes, i fitted the system myself.

Make sure you use a six point socket. I started with a 12 point and could feel it was starting to slip. The most difficult one is the nut closest to the block. I also found that sliding back the slip joint on the steering column gave better access.

        Good Luck

          Thanks.

I visited the exhaust shop that replaced my muffler with a straight through unit to get a quote. The installer said don't bother if I'm not adding a chip as a straight through muffler with factory pipe is sufficient for the engine size. The installer said that the minimal top end gain isn't worth it for what it will cost to either fabricate or bolt on a premade system.

Thanks. I will get one before I start, all mine are 12 point.
