  • 2010 3.0L D4D long crank and white smoke

    Hi everyone,

First post so I will try to keep it short. I have major issues with start up (16 months now) and just recently started blowing white smoke. I have been to multiple mechanics, three Cmi Toyota dealerships and a number of locals mecs for overnight cold starts and left for days with no one claiming to be able to solve the problem.

Codes 1604 and 1605 startart ability and rough idle have shown on computer but no one seems to be able to solve the problem.

Majority of startups result in long crank time being between 5-9 second prior to start and sometimes clonking out once started. Recently started blowing a lot of white smoke when starting on first push of the button. Smoke would last for a couple of minutes up the road before clearing. Car runs fine once driving bar start up issues and smoke.

I have 100,000k on the clock and serviced regularly. On testing, rail pressure dropped on startup so I had the injectors checked on was told, with readouts that they were slightly out of spec so had them changed. New suction control valve and starter moter have also been replaced.

I am currently at wits end and don't know where to go from here. One Cmi dealership told me to keep driving it and when the problem gets worse they will be able to see what the problem is??? because the error code wouldn't last long enough for them to get a proper readout.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks Mick

Speak to ############# on here. He is a Melbourne based mechanic and a 1KD-FTV expert. It may be worth the drive if you're getting no love in Adelaide.

If the mechanics can't help lay a complaint with Toyota. It is only 100,000k should not happen.

Thanks every one, I made a complaint with Toyota and have a Tec calling today. Hopefully we can start to resolve the issue.

White smoke is fuel so as suggested above check glowplugs given the rest has been looked at.

Is it cold start only or all starts? If all then as #### mentions could be filter sucking air. We had a similar thing with the 4JJ in the Colorado and it was a leaking fuel return pipe.

Just for knowledge sake as I know lot of experts are looking into this, wouldn't a longer cranking time push more un-burnt fuel and possibly oil into the chamber and that is coming out as the vehicle starts? But that would be blue smoke not white? Just throwing my idea that there is possible unused fuel after all that cranking of the engine. Is there such a things as bad timing on diesel motors?
D4D. How long will it last?

White smoke = coolant being burnt.

Possible Cracked head or Turbo seal

I doubt the smoke would disappear in a few minutes if that were the cause.
