  • New audio head unit and reversing camera, suggestions please

I have a 2009 120 GXL and would really appreciate if someone can point me in the right direction particularly if they have had a good result. Would like to replace the OEM head unit with something that offers a a good reversing camera image as the number one priority. Secondary concern would be for good sound, good radio reception and features like apple CarPlay. A direct fit in the dash with minimal modification would also be ideal. Thanks in anticipation.

I have an aftermarket head unit from Eonon which is an obscure Chinese brand that makes head units that fit perfectly into dashboards and factory looms. It's not the highest quality (for example the front stereo jack has stopped working after a year) but they're very cheap, so you get what you pay for. Luckily I use Bluetooth which works fine!

Just two things to bear in mind for you that I found when researching:

First, the Prado radio is slightly wider than a regular double DIN radio, so a lot of standard aftermarket radios won't fit tidily. The Eonon ones, despite being cheap, fit perfectly though.

Second, if you plan to fit it yourself you're not in for a fun time... You have to pull off the entire centre dash panel and pull the radio out backwards, it's pretty time consuming. Took me most of the day to do mine, but I also pulled off all the trim along the side rails to wire in the reversing camera nearly, rather than just tucking the wires behind trim...

    Good luck!

I did exactly this about a year ago. I went with a Kenwood HU (about $300 in a JB HiFi sale) with matching reversing camera. Fitting was pretty easy apart from routing the cable for the camera and microphone. I also ran a USB into the glove box to connect and charge my phone, iPod etc. You'll need a couple of these - https://aerpro.com/atb2 to fill each end. I'm happy with the results, although the HU has an annoying habit of freezing sometimes. When/if decent sat nav ones become cheaper, I'll probably replace it but it does the job for now. Oh, and grab a connecting harness as it will save loads of time and hassle.

Thanks Prerderp/ Hector_the_dog, sounds like great tips. Are you happy with the reverse camera view in low light?

I bought a Pioneer AVIC F70DAB with Carplay and bought a pioneer reversing camera. The unit was ex floor stock and I got a reasonably good deal, (the RRP is eye watering).

The main reason I picked a known brand name is after trawling through hundreds of posts before making my decision about what to buy, a lot of the lesser known brands don't seem to last in the long run. Sure you save a few hundred dollars up front but you end up with some features that don't work in 12-18 months.
The carplay feature in the Pioneer is nice and I have used it with my previous Android phone and it worked flawlessly. The iPhone I find to be fickle and you HAVE to use a genuine apple cord from the back of the unit to the phone, (can't use in conjunction with a USB extension cable). Asking SIRI or OK Google if the store you are driving is actually open is a handy feature, the voice activated calling people is OK, as is the reading of SMS messages, but I find some of this stuff can become a distraction when driving.

To be honest I mostly use the phone on Bluetooth audio and not carplay, main reason is the carplay menu for Spotify and other audio streaming is really limiting. I do use the built in Pioneer GPS navigation on the unit and the software has had a few updates over the period I have had the unit installed. It's not quite as good as Google maps but it is getting very close, with on the fly recommended diversions to save time in traffic and other features.

          The only real negatives:
-The screen can be hard to see if you wear polarising sunglasses and in certain light, although this is the case with all touchscreen head units I guess.
I haven't checked but there is possible a screen cover that could reduce this I guess.

-There is no quick way to dim the brightness of the screen, it can be pretty bright at night when driving in the country.

Forgot to add... I have a Kaymar rear bar. The camera is mounted to the jerrycan holder. Seems to capture a decent field of view. Not sure where others have mounted their camera.

I went for the F60DAB previous year to fayboydave and think it's a magic unit. my unit from Pioneer's Aust ebay shop came with the camera too.

I bought a Joying Android 5.1.1 unit off ebay a few months ago. I'm sorry, I can't find the link any more - looks like they've upgraded. FWIW, my experience has been:

Their Toyota specific unit was a good fit. I liked that I didn't have to add in the side pieces as you usually have to when fitting a double DIN unit to the wider slot in a Toyota.

I'm happy with the screen, the stereo, and the built in Navi. Don't think I've used it much for DVD, though, so can't comment on that.

The reverse camera works fine BUT when linked with an aftermarket version of the 120 Prado camera (which is offset mounted, replacing one of the number plate lights) it is not as useful as it should be, because the coloured lines that appear on the screen assume a centre-mounted camera. I find I can't trust it that much. I'm hoping down the track to replace the camera with a centre-mounted one, if I can find a place.

One of the things I really wanted was to be able to use Torque Pro with an ELM327 adapter to bring up gauges on the screen - hence the reason I chose an Android unit. This actually works quite well. The most useful gauges for me are boost, fuel rail pressure, and auto transmission fluid temps for the transmission pan and the torque converter. There are others as well. It also does fuel economy but so far I haven't been able to get that to give me anything near a true value - don't know why.

The app for music is fairly ordinary. It's possible Joying has improved that by now, though - a number of people had complained about it, and they seem to be doing constant improvements.

On the whole I'm pretty happy with it, for a budget unit.
