Most vehicles are 1 lt from full to empty on the dip stick. I will be keeping an eye on this 2 are we had a light pop up prior to our 10k service fairly well convinced they over filled the oil this time
The only time the low-oil light came on was last Friday (got it serviced today/ Monday) when I was stationary and pointing down a hill at a set of traffic lights. Then it went out once on the flat, so I thought that was it. I was heading home anyway because the next trip was to the mechanics. I've now got a 5L bottle all ready to go should it require a top-up again.

With that, and an as-yet unidentified squealing sound from the engine bay, as well as a couple of puffs of white smoke (albeit pre-ECU update - and they weren't interested in the white smoke at the recall) has me thinking... This is the first Toyota for me since the mid-1990's when they were bullet-proof. They also had features on the car that no other cars had (i.e., they were in line or better equipped than the market average). I now see issues with this car's engine and DPF and notice a lot of other issues surrounding not just the Prado but the V8 and the other 2.8's (and the 3.0D4D)... and as we all know it's fitted out like a base model Suzuki MightyBoy at $65K.

I hate to say it, but I don't think I'll get another Toyota again.

Oh... and the App just froze on me since the last update. Can't log in now, as a lot of people on the App Store are saying also. Tried to send an email to Toyota Customer Care from their website - their email enquiry button just hour-glasses for hours...

This is not the Toyota I remember....

My 2016 2.8 GXL has 15,000km on the clock and has been using oil from new. At 6000 I first noticed it and my local dealer had to add 500ml of oil and said they would monitor it, I then had the vehicle serviced at 10,000km. The vehicle now has travelled 15,000 km and i had to take it back to the dealer to have another 350ml added again to be told they will monitor it. Not happy

Webby all internal combustion engines will use some oil. I don't think 350ml over 5,000km is excessive and don't forget that the sump holds 7.5 litres. I think my 2015 2.8 D4D uses about the same. Cheers.

That's not good. I have never had a car use that much oil, there is something very wrong with that engine.

              Ditto Webby78,

The last three oilburners I've owned (from new) have never required topups between services. My 2016 1GD hasnt moved from the top line on the dipstick between services (coming up on 30k) and before someone brings up DPF burn oil dilution unlike other designs (mazda I'm looking at you) the dedicated 5th injector means at least that isnt one of the 1GD's problems.

After saying that it could be use case related. @camjam/mablack Do your Prado's get much of a workout?

Not too much of a workout. In a month it'll to 25km to/from work Mon-Fri, then at least twice a month (usually weekly) it'll go for a 400km round trip - mostly freeway. Thrown in the odd simple box trailer load perhaps once every two months and that's it.

It'll go on 6000km round trips campingt (done that twice - McDonnell Ranges and Flinders) twice a year - but I get them serviced before I go. It didn't go on one of those in the 2L oil-loss interval though. I use 15W-40 because of the temperatures of where I go, and have a catch-can (Provent 200) installed - that's the only change from normal. I'll check again in around 2000km (about to go on a trip) making it a 4000 interval...

But if this keeps up, and the DPF issues remain, and the thing blows white smoke (once every 8000km or so) then I think, ExNissan, I will be NewNissan and ExToyota with a Patrol V8 I think... Bought this car for 400,000km's of reasonably trouble-free motoring, not issues from the get-go. I'd even update to the new 2018 Prado, but they dropped the Petrol dammit!

Very very similar usage to mine! Just substitute Flinders/Vic High Country for Flinders/McDonnell Ranges and some offroading for the highway runs!

I dont know what oil is going into mine - whatever Toyota (Phillip) are putting into it, but no oil use (so far) between services.

As for Toyota dropping the petrol I too was looking at it as the next 4wd given its getting similar economy/range. In 3 years I might be in the same boat as you. Not interested in a oil burner that needs add-blue/SCR - just another system that can strand you in the bush for no good reason.

Toyota Phillip (or Fyshwick while they're undergoing renovations) will be using the 0W-30 spec oil - which is standard Toyota. They're the ones doing the checking for me, and like I said they've been pretty good so far. Nothing at all wrong with 0-15 Oil and obviously it's the recommended one by Toyota - I just find that for the temperatures outback the 15 weight adds a little more security (and its still within the Toyota Specs as per the book).

Nah mate it's a family car and the most it's ever towed is a bike trailer with 1 bike on it.

further update - from service today, its been confirmed that our prado has comsummed a furhter 3.2L of oil over 10,000km. the dealer will be putting in a formal submission to toyota for further advice as they have advised this comsumption is above reasonable expectations. The service interval included about 1400km of towing a 2ton camper trailer, so comsuption increased from 2.2L to 3.2L of oil.

looks like toyota are starting to have a serious look at it now have to take it in for a full going over and recheck after 2000km. this is starting to be painfull. Has any one else had oil comsuption issues?
