  • excessive oil consumption

    Hi All

We have a July 2016 VX (from new) which has done 28000km. Low oil warning came on and we discovered that there was no oil on the dip stick. It had been 7000km since our last service and they confirmed they put the right amount of oil in. To get it back to the right level it took 2.25Litres of oil. Any history excessive oil usage with anyone?

Have you checked the engine surrounds for obvious oil leaks. It is very excessive for that much to escape without notice (driveway patch etc) in such a short space of time and age of the Prado… That is if they serviced it correctly!
The diesel engines have name for leaking compared to petrols but not at this age of the engine

No obvious oil leaks anywhere, Toyota are going to monitor oil consumption from the next service due in 2000km

2.25L in 7 thou ... I would have thought that there would be oil mist all over the tailgate or running out of the tail pipe or a puddle on the ground. It doesnt evaporate!

Have you had it since new ?
If so and you have had no history of oil use then fair bet the "technician" only added 2 jugs not 3 & didnt do a final check n top.

Did you check fluids after last service ?

I do an external inspection of my car for dents with toyota staff, i check oil n fluids in front of them before i start it - and start it in front of them

If you got it serviced by them they should be looking at the problem now and not in 2,000km. If there is a serious underlying problem it could cause possible irreparable damage within that time.
However I think it was just not serviced properly which was hinted here:

Given there is a large amount missing in the short timeframe and no evidence anywhere the above is you best bet

If no oil leaks evident ( and it will look like an oil bloodbath if 2 litres is under there) then I'd say your mechanic has some explaining to do.

Unless you've got some killer oil consumption. I'd be imagining white smoke would be evident.

If not the mechanic. Then I'd be monitoring usage every 500 kms. If it uses none over a 1000 or 2. blame the mechanic.

If it uses any and no oil leaks back to Toyota for warranty.

I thought it was funny they confirmed they put the right amount of oil in from a service 7,000km ago. How would they know haha. I've course they're not going to admit they didn't put enough in because then they could leave themselves open to all kinds of retribution from the car owner. For over 2L to leak in that time you'd have a serious gasket leak going on and there'd be oil blow back all under the front half of your chassis. You wouldn't miss it that's for sure and neither would Toyota if they had a quick look under the car. Or if you had a loose sump bolt that they didn't tighten then you'd still have a lot of oil blow back. It'd be messy under there. I think they just simply didn't put the right amount in. Simple to do if their mind is elsewhere and they're rushing through the job.

As for burning off through the exhaust... You'd notice the smoke when you accelerate off the lights at the very least. There'd be a lot of smoke. For your age of car the only way that'd happen is if you over filled it with oil by a fair amount.

Not forgetting the fact that the DPF would be having a stroke by now too...

It's good practice to always check the oil level the day after a service.

Have you not checked it since the service or at all in the last 7000 kms.

My is uses 350 ml over 2300km get oil check by Toyota as very noisy if not always full to top 10000km on it now.
Fuel economy is also not great about 10.5L 100km all open roads
I check the oil every time use it.

I recon It's even better practice to check the oil level etc before you drive the car away from having a service. On different occasions I've found a dealership mechanics spanner under the bonnet, the airfillter not changed, the oil filter not changed, and tyres not rotated, etc. I've not found insufficient engine oil, but others on this forum have, so I do some quick checks before I drive way from a dealership. I'd also be concerned that they may have used the wrong grade of oil Perhaps.

update on oil monitoring. another 1.2L of oil used after 5000km. so it appears not a one off from the mechanic not topping the oil up correctly. having another check soon that will include 1500km of towing. should be interesting. will my DPF be stuffed if its going out the back?

Just had my 2.8L serviced today at 29,000km's. A 2016 GXL. It also had lost just over 2L of oil since the last Service, and I only get it serviced at one of the country's most reputable service dealers in the Southern Highlands. It had done 9800km's since the last service. I'll be monitoring this one now... I know around 0.4L of that would have been drained through the catch-can, as I empty that regularly and around 100ml comes out each time (say, every 2 - 3000km). I've also got an unknown whistling/ squealing sound happening when it's all warmed up and coasting which they couldn't identify. They've changed all the filters and lubricated everything today, including fan belts etc, but just as I got home the sound came through again... Sounds great huh? Have a trip to Alice in a few months time heading out to Finke/ Orminston and Ayers Rock. Hopefully it's sorted by then.

2lts of oil without top ups, Did your oil light pop up ?
Most vehicles are 1 lt from full to empty on the dip stick. I will be keeping an eye on this 2 are we had a light pop up prior to our 10k service fairly well convinced they over filled the oil this time

Always check the "day after a service"....not for me, I ALWAYS do a quick walk around and a check under the bonnet, including the dip stick, BEFORE I pay for the service ie before I even drive away. .
I've posted elsewhere before, but honestly, i've found spanners, screw drivers under the bonnet, i've found oil filter or air filter not changed, wheels not rotated ...and the list goes on...needless to say I am very careful who services my Prado now, BUT...I always check, and in fact a good mechanic should actually invite you to do a a quick double check...but fortunately I've never found no oil ....but I have found oil NOT changed...ie really really black (remembering that diesel engine oil does go black very quickly)....and how easy would it be, as a busy mechanic, to drain the oil, get distracted, and then neglect to refill the oil....it has happened before, and has happened to to a forum member, but I cant recall who. Trust no-one... always do a quick check. If there is no oil or water or whatever, its to late if you drive home,as the damage will be well and truly done by then.
Let us know how you go.
