  • What rotors to fit for towing?

    Now we are towing a 1200 kg caravan all the time my brake rotor wobble needs to be fixed.

    Are the dimpled rotors worth the extra $50, what are the benefits?

    Or do I have to go up to cross drilled to get any noticeable better braking performance.

    PS new heavy duty pads are coming anyway.

    Last trip she struggled towards the bottom of Victoria Pass, I could feel the brakes protesting;
    but I could have manually dialed up more trailer braking instead of just going on the auto system.

    You won't notice any difference in performance with slotted or dimpled rotors, just stick with quality solid units.

    Better pads will help as will dialling more trailer brakes in like you mentioned.

    Also gear down if you aren't already.

      Yeah use your lower gears to help with the braking. It makes a big difference. I don't tow, but used to have problems all the time from rotor warp and brake fade when having to decend a 3km decent down a mountain range on a daily basis and then having to come to a complete stop right at the bottom of it before making a u turn to go back up a small portion of the up section. That was with Bendix pads and standard rotors. It was a real brake and rotor killer that steep decent. After constant rotor warp I switched to slotted and dimpled rotors (still with Bendix pads) a couple of years ago. No more warped rotors since and brake performance has increased a fair bit with no more brake fade when pulling up to the stop at the bottom. I can vouch for slotted and dimpled rotors. Can't really comment on them for towing as I don't tow, but I'd take a punt in saying there'd be a noticeable improvement over standard rotors. The whole design with the slots and dimples allows them to shed more heat.

        I changed mine out to slotted and dimpled.
        Heard sometimes the cross drilled can crack due to weekening, but thats probably just the cheaper brands anyhow.
        Changed mine not for towing but to get rid of the squeaking noise from the Toyota ones.
