  • That’s a great feeling knowing it’s set to go

    But

What about when it’s a bit of a shopping cart for the wife and a fair few of the kms will be city driving (70/30) will these aftermarket items be of assistance then or is it still a set and forget type vehicle regarding mechanicals ?

basic research did show there's a myriad of options and useful aftermarket hardware that people fit almost like it should of been done from factory but i suppose my question is, isn't the vehicle good enough from factory or are these things really needed ?

thanks in advance and feel free to point out that i didn't stump up for the Kakadu lol

You don't need anything so it depends on where you want to go and what you want to use it for.

I have a 155 SX three door and a relatively light off-road camper trailer.

It is still stock standard with standard tyres and suspension but has a dual battery system, Polyair airbags in the rear springs to keep it level and a UHF CB with the aerial on the front guard.

I don't drive in the outback till after dawn and I stop at the beginning of dusk so I have no bar and no need of driving lights.

Still on standard rubber and I only have the standard 85 litre tank.

This has taken us through the Flinders Ranges and Arkaroola, Oodnadatta track, Dalhousie and Mt Dare (worse corrugations ever) Uluru, Kings Creek and Canyon, Larapinta loop to Glen Helen and on to Litchfield, Kakadu and Darwin.

No roof rack so it all came home on the Ghan.

We travel quite light so thing don't tend to need upgrading and things don't tend to break easily.

So long as you don't want to go rock climbing, drive through muddy bog holes and cross deep rivers and you keep the load down your vehicle will be great as it is.

You only need to add stuff when your planning shows you need to be better prepared.

I've got time on my side so if I come across anything unexpected and I am unprepared for it I will happily turn around and find a better way. I enjoy the journey and the destination but conquering every obstacle is just not my style anymore.

I came to the Prado after many years of old 'Cruiser and much more refined Patrols so I think the SX, which is really a short GXL, is luxury and the Kakadu is for pampered pussies.

Join a club and get some training and enjoy it all and only add stuff when you need it for your journey or just because sometimes you just like the look.

      • Hey thanks for the reply

Sounds like these busses are fairly capable then out of the box, pretty impressed with the MY18 over the MY17 as it’s received a bunch of standard features in the GXL that was VX option for MY17 not to mention the facelift and interior re design has come along way ! ( no disrespect to MY17 owners )

Modifying is in the blood and that’s what my passion is with Drag/street cars but I don’t want to fit things that aren’t really 100% needed so to speak as i know it’ll blow out and I’ll end up with a highly modified truck and the wife will kill me haha on that note what’s an exhaust sound like on these 2.8’s ?

        • Just took delivery of my Kakadu today and drove around 100km. Sports mode is certainly a game changer, much quicker from start and uphill. So many buttons and features.... will take me quite a while to learn everything. A good read of the manual should help too. I earlier test drove VX as well and can confidently say that Kakadu absorbs the bumps and corners better. Sound system is decent but not spectacular, bass heads will feel the absence of a subwoofer. The vehicle looks good with a nudge bar. Wife is very happy with the dusty bronze colour, son is happy about the dvd screen and I have a very deep hole in my pocket.

To be fair to the dealer as well, I should not perhaps state the name. This was is Sydney’s west. I showed them the sales history spreadsheet somebody put up on this thread. Good luck mate!

                  • By the way, what accessories are included in $85,500?

                    • Just signed a contract on a new 2018 Prado GX, in boring Glacier White . It's a factory order so I'm expecting delivery in March 2018.

In terms of accessories, I got the rubber floor mats, rear parking sensors, and the tow kit.

I only wanted 5 seats, and the extra kit in the GXL didn't really appeal to me, so the GX suits us.

Looking forward to some big trips with the family next year!

I’m currently waiting for a good deal on much the same setup, except no nudge bar and weather shields. We’ve not had a great offer so far (although marginally cheaper than yours but with less stuff) and basically we’re hoping the end of year will spur some dealers on to give us a deal nearer $81/82k.

Test drove the kakadu and it was actual,y difficult to notice much in the suspension, but quite apparent the s+ mode holds the revs longer. I’ve used this as a way to convince the wife it makes sense to stretch our budget for the added safety when overtaking...

Saw a dusty bronze gxl too, it’s a nice colour particularly when the sun catches it. It’ll be our choice, should look great in kakadu trim. Wouldn’t mind seeing a photo or two if you wouldn’t mind obliging!

Can only speak to the good over the gxl: the leather interior is better than the add-on option of the gxl, largely because it also includes leather in the door and centre console. It has chrome trim around the windows and side steps, and combined with the larger sportier alloys sets it apart.
It has the 360 degree camera system, blind and cross traffic monitors and the all important cooler box!

It’s a solid upgrade in my opinion and were it not for the lack of kdss I’d be sticking with it.

                          • Loving my new GXL but anyone else with the new model noticing how lackluster the high beams are? There seems to be little difference between with the high beams on. Even the fog lights do a better job.

While on the other hand, the new headlights (low beam) are amazing. After spending 240,000km in my 2013 GXL, perhaps I'm not used to looking out into the dark with the new LED lights, but wow it's a massive difference.... those low beams are bright!!!

Also, it doesn't look like the headlight adjusting switch is there anymore. My mate who was driving in front of me at night was complaining how high the headlights were shining.
