Tried both myself. You can certainly feel the gearbox hold high revs much longer in the kakadu's sports mode, however I'm not sure you couldn't just replicate the same experience using the auto slipshift setting (the s-,s+ gearshift position). Rumour has it the sports mode in the kakadu also stiffens the suspension and steering but on a test drive that's very difficult to notice. Would be nice to see something official on that, maybe from the handbook?

I think the biggest reason to upgrade is the KDSS, and no doubt Toyota is well aware of this as they deleted it from every other Prado model.

I paid $84,000 with tow bar pack, nudge bar, window tint (front sides), weather shields (front sides), rubber mats front and back, rubber cargo mat and full tank fuel. In my view, KDSS makes a huge difference in minimising body roll on the road when cornering. The video screen was a hit with the kids and is worth having. Crawl control is a very usefull feature off-road both uphill and downhill.... makes life so much easier. I found the sunroof to be useless though. Kakadu's air suspension has an auto levelling function that prevents the vehicle from nose-diving after breaking and also reportedly keeps the vehicle level when towing (I have not towed yet). Last but not the least.... the sports and sports+ drive modes take away the usual sluggishness out of Prados. They do make a very noticeable difference and make driving fun, especially the sports+ mode. Now, I believe its worth paying extra $10k for KDSS, air suspension, DVD screen, crawl control and sports drive modes. Downsides of Kakadu?..... higher price (but potentially higher resale value), crowded inner console with too many buttons and knobs and difficulty of after-market suspension upgrades for lifting (if you plan to do so).
Yeah, totally agree, but budget is as always the pain. I would have gone for that VX if that sales offered me $66000, however he didn't do that. Just put a deposit on a GXL with leather option, tow pack, floor & cargo matt, tank of fuel for $66000, picking the car up in March.

          • Removed as our Prado shopping experience in Canberra may not be of interest.

The 'sports+' mode does indeed stiffen the suspension, it makes the ride noticeably bumpier. I have experimented this by driving over same bumps on different drive modes. In fact I lowered my tire pressure a bit to keep the ride at a comfortable level on sports+ mode which I use quite often. The 'sports' mode (without the +) also stiffens the suspension, but to a lesser extent with lower acceleration as well. The 'eco' mode did in fact give me 1.6l/100km lower fuel consumption reading under reasonably similar 38km stretch. I could not make out much difference between the 'comfort' and 'normal' mode but still experimenting.

Another fascinating aspect of Prado, as I see it, is the small turning radius. Its about the same as my mid sized sedan!

              • I am going to be entering into a new lease on a 2018 GXL Prado with Leather upgrade, Tow Pack, Carpet Mats, Tank of Fuel with a 5 Year Unlimited K Warranty. I have been supplied with a figure by the lease company which is a FBT Base Value of $63551. My understanding is that that figure includes GST but excludes Stamp Duty, Registration and Compulsory Third Party insurance.

My question is what do the Stamp Duty, Rego and CTP costs amount to ?

If I get a better quote from a dealer the fleet company will go with them, so I need to know what those costs are so I can deduct them from any quote I get.

Although this is for a VX it might help you figure out your costs:

                          • That sounds like a pretty good deal. Is that for Automatic & the 3T towpack which is only on the new 2018 model?

                            • Yeah auto and tow bar rated to 3T on when geared with an auto. Not sure what the tow pack is. Assuming it is just the tow bar and loom?

                              • 2018 prado

Wife and I looking at the Toyota 2017 run out by looking at dealer Prado offers. The prices for the GXL are between $68K and $69k. We have checked Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide Toyota sites plus some major towns in between.

We are in Canberra (military) and late December Toyota here told us the price for a 2018 GXL is $68,500 Toyota Canberra and every one else is advertising the 2017 for that price.

Please let me know if I am wrong but it looks like I have to negotiate face to face to get a better price like STR8UP posted as few days back. $63K with a towbar and a heap of other accessories. That sort of deal is very unlikely in Canberra so we need to travel I guess. Last time we bough was 1999 - we got a really good deal a a Prado Snowy at Nunawadding Victoria. Melbourne then was slightly cheaper than Sydney and Canberra showed us the door.

We are not is a hurry but our son is pushing the new Prado because he gets the old for a bargain - haha. Cheers and thanks.
