  • HELP! I cant find the whistle in my 150.

My 2010 diesel prado never used to whistle.

Then one weekend i fitted a safari snorkel, provent 200 catch can, fuel manager final filter, egr 7mm restrictor plate and did a decarb clean back to the intake elbow. It started whistling straight after that.

The whistle comes on only when the engine warms up. It starts when the coolant temperature gets to about 55 degrees, comes on under load at 1600rpm and is noticeable through to 2000rpm.

It all pointed towards a vacuum leak, so i pulled the intake out again, replaced all gaskets, tightened everything up, checked that the egr plate was in tight, but to no avail. Exactly the same.
Ive sprayed carb cleaner onto every junction and hose that i could get to, but no change to engine revs at all.

Other than starting to replace the vacuum lines one by one, I'm at a complete loss.

Can anyone suggest anything else that i can try before it drives me bonkers?

Does it occur only when driving? If so, try moving the snorkel head and see if it changes.

You've got a boost leak. Diesels rarely make vacuum so finding the leak with carby clean won't work. Even at idle the turbo will be making a small amount of pressure in the intake. One of the joints/gaskets is leaking.

This photo is from a patrol zd30 that was doing the same as yours, it was previously assembled by a mechanic. If you look closely you can see he didn't align the gasket and only one bolt went in the right hole so the hole in the centre was offset and boost leaked out. This is from the egr pipe on the back of the cooler and is in a pr#!k of a spot. Not saying you've made the same mistake but something like that is easy to do

From the look of it, that guy missed aligning the gasket by about 1".

I was convinced it was a leak too. But I've checked and double checked everything. The gaskets that i pulled out showed no signs of misalignment or marks from leaking. There is no noticeable lack of power either.

Is it at all possible that the 7mm hole is whistling?

Can you test for boost leaks with something like soapy water?

Maybe it is belt noise that i just didnt notice before, but i doubt that too.

Its not the snorkel. That would be embarrassing.

        Thanks for your help.
