Sounds like it's not an isolated issue...

Squealing from engine bay - coasting and under load (intermittent)

Dammit. Spoke to soon. After the DPF replacement, it ran sweetly and without a whistling/ squealing/ bearing sound for around 1500km's. This was a far cry from the every 70km's (almost like clockwork in the same place coming home from work) that I was getting. However, I have only just today heard the sound back again - not as bad, but it's how it started last time. All the same sounds, and it's getting worse again. I give it another 6 months or so for Toyota to fix (the local Toyota are aware of two others with similar complaints) else it's on the market. This really is annoying and so far I have spent more on warranty on this car than any other one I have owned (yet I turned to this brand because it was meant to be one of if not the best for long-term reliability).

Update on this - finally went for a drive and the head mechanic at my local heard it in spades. The squealing, the two distinct different pitches in sound it makes - the whole lot. He's taken some notes and computer shots and is going to send it off to Toyota tech. Hopefully something in the new year with respect to finding a solution.

Mechanic thought it was Brakes /bearings...changed bearings and disappeared for about a month and then came back. Frustrating to say the least. Thought it may have been CVs nad it appears to be two distinct squeals.
Anyone find a fix?

Just an update on this, in case it helps someone problem shoot the thing.
Toyota have had it the past two days. They have stripped the driveshaft off looking for the squeal (checking all seals and lubrication), the DPF came off again (seals checked, blockages checked), turbo was looked at (that broken blade on another thread - looked for that), 5th Injector and anything else they could think of - and the squeal remains. They took 4 mechanics as well as the service manager all for seperate drives to try and ascertain what was going on.
Tomorrow it goes into Berrima Diesel for its regular service. I'll see what they say (last time I took it there it refused to squeal on me!). I can only hope!

My 2015 gxl 2.8 auto is at its worst between 80 and 100 at light throttle settings .no help from Toyota they said it's torque converter lock up in 5th and 6th gear but when it still made the noise in 4th the Toyota mech simply decided not to acknowledge it . If Toyota Japan hasn't put out a Bulletin about a issue then they pretend it doesn't exist ! It's most likely pinion in front diff in my opinion because when the front prop shaft slip joint is pressurised with grease so the shaft expands and puts pressure on the front diff flange the noise is dramatically reduced to the point I can live with it .the Toyota mech removed the grease nipple to release the pressure on the front shaft and the noise is now back twice as bad yet he still can only say it's the torque converter isue so he doesn't jeopardise his job .I'll be pumping grease back in it tomorrow . PS I reported this noise to Toyota and have been complaining about it since early 2016 . The prick at the service counter told me I was probably hearing wind noise from the roof rails the very first time I mentioned it . Amazing wind noise can go away and come back when I slightly load and unload the drive train 😩. I would be interested if anyone with a manual 2.8 gd is experiencing this annoying noise .

One thing they have done is put what they call rabbit ears on the car. That's microphones on both wheel callipers, above the heat-soak near the DPF, and the front Diff. It's coming from around that heat soak near the DPF (an exhaust heat shield). They 'removed & replaced the flange bolts and springs' and some kind of gasket that's in there - but heard it coming home today again.
I'll be calling Toyota tomorrow to try and give them this car back. In two weeks, they want my car in for a full week (at least now I get a loan car) to have a look at the whole problem. If it doesn't get fixed by the end of that, I probably won't take it back.
You are right though, in having the grease in the shaft making it quieter. Why is anyone's guess. If they find something, I'll put the details up again.

I spent a lot of money and time chasing down a similar squeal on my 120. As has been posted it turned out to be the expansion join in the exhaust located under the drivers door. My 150 has the same setup as the 120 so I know what I would be eliminating first by spraying some silicone or even WD40 in the joint to see if it helps.

Had a same thing happen for the first time on my 2014 GXL 65k. Again lasted a very short while but I can confirm it sounded like the noise of worn break pads. There was a car in front of me so I thought it was its making the noise but as it moved away the noise was still there. Hum another un-documented feature!D4D. How long will it last?

Yeah, it's nothing to do with the brakes - that's for certain as not only does it not matter if I tap them or not while the sound occurs, the microphones picked up nothing them.
It's near the exhaust, just above to DPF. That's where the microphones picked it up from. Also fits with why, after they replaced the DPF, the sound went for 1500km's.
Anyway - as much as I have babied and done nothing but throw money at this car with quality oils, accessories and servicing, I think I've given up. I'm potentially trading the car tomorrow (at least getting it appraised and test driving another 4WD) so I may never get to the bottom of it. It's supposedly in the exhaust system somewhere (including the DPF potential) but I've spent far too long trying to get it sorted, I still won't trust it with the kids in remote locations, and I have some big trips coming up. It's in for all of next week though, pending how things go tomorrow I guess... The dealership has been awesome, the 'guest experience' or Toyota resolution people have been beyond useless. It's why it won't be a Toyota next time, or ever again.

Sorry to hear that you are on the verge of giving up with your Prado, I hope this doesn't mean you will be leaving the forum? as I have enjoyed reading your posts.
My Prado was the first Toyota that I have ever owned, one of the factors that influenced my decision was Toyota's reputation, I remember sayings like "if you visit the outback take a Landrover but if you want to come back take a Toyota" I wonder if the "guest experience centre" still believe this as my experience with them is identical to yours.
It seems such a shame that you feel let down by Toyota's inability to diagnose your fault when apart from this issue you probably feel the same as me that the basic vehicle is very good.
I don't know if you ever read the Fortuner forum but I am regularly in touch with a guy on there who teaches student mechanics. He tells me that nobody diagnoses faults any more, they send a recording from techstream to Toyota "techs" who reply telling them what to change and how long it should take them to do it.
