  • Figuring out Diff ratios

Hey guys, I need your expertise.

I need to replace my diff after the old one grenaded up the high country a few weeks ago.
Question is, how do i figure out what ratio it is?

It has a code on the plate A02A, however after a bit of a search this appears to have multiple ratios.

I just got under it to see if there are any codes, all I can find is 35140 stamped on the diff.

Its a 2003 120 V6 auto Grande - as far as I can tell these had a 3.9 ratio, but I need to know for certain!

    HELP!! haha

So next question, does anyone know if a 150 3.9 diff will fit a 120?
They seem to have the same part codes, but I've since found out that it doesn't necessarily mean anything between toyota models. lol

As far as i am aware the 120 have a 8" diff, like the Hilux (eg 41201-80189). The Prado 150 has a 8.2" diff like the > 2011 FJ cruiser and US 4runner (eg 41201-80566).

They have different part numbers; seems the inner gears are common between 120 and 150.

                This is a handy site

I'd also like to know the answer to this question! The 8.2" is also stronger than the 8" and less prone to shearing crown wheel teeth as far as I'm aware?

is the gasket for the centre different?
is the axle sizes the same spline ?

i was going look at doing the whole housing swap a while ago but didn't follow it up
as i found the E lockers were factory in the US for the FJ and it seamed they came from the 150/FJ platform

i wanted to get 4.3 ratio's to run the bigger tyres to gain that extra clearance over the lift and not sacrifice the economy & response the car has
