    Hi,

    I have a 2008 Toyota Prado Grande. Serviced meticulously and well looked after.

    Two weeks ago, I was driving and lost power for a very short time, get revs back and continued driving, lost power again, and then it eventually lost power all together. It broke down by the side of the road. No lights came up on the dash board. At the time of the break down I was onto my second tank (green light) and seemed to be only a quarter of the way through it.

    NRMA attended, could get the engine started when priming it manually but it would not start and remain started itself.

    I then had it towed to my local mechanic but he didn't seem to have much of a clue. He had it for five days as he was busy and didn't get a good look at it. He eventually rings me and tells me that he had added 20 litres of diesel to it and it is now starting (no other repair). He said he thought it may be the fuel pump but to drive it for a few days and return for a fix the following week when he had time to repair it.

    I then drove away and tried to add some more diesel to make sure it was topped up. It only took about 7 litres before the bowser was indicating that the tank was full (by my calculations that could not have been possible as one of the tanks should have been empty at minimum.

    I then drove the car for one day before breaking down after about 70km's. Same problem, lost power, broke down by the side of the road. Towed again but this time straight to Toyota.

    Toyota were busy so it took a week or so for them to get around to it.
    .
    I explained what happened, and they thought it was the fuel pump that pumps fuel from the second tank into the main tank.
    .
    Today they had the time to remove the tanks and fit the new pump. It turns out that the pump was getting old and the fuel filter was full of gunk completely. Nevertheless a new pump and filter completely cleaned.
    .
    Drive away. Car is now running fine.

    Without any fuel added by Toyota it now indicates we are back to the main tank (no green light) and about half full. I then go to the servo and fill tank to capacity and it took another 25 litres.
    .
    Get back into the car.............fuel indicator shows just above half full on main tank but not FULL.
    .
    Have called Toyota. They said give it a run and it may rectify itself. They have no idea what it may be.

    Any suggestions. I would appreciate your help.

    read up about the fuel jet pump system used for transferring fuel between the two tanks. If clogged or not working it will pump fuel into the rear tank and empty the main where the fuel is taken from. When trying to fill at the servo you would get frothing and bubbling like the tank was fuel but it isn't.

    Had that issue a few years ago. Try to fill up and it would froth and splatter everywhere and took 30min's to fill the tank. would also run out of fuel soon after when light for 90ltrs came on. Changed filters, checked fuel pump in main under floor tank, nothing. Ended up being clogged or faulty unit in rear tank. Looks like an Octopus with 4 pipes coming out of it.
    Thing in the square in the middle of the pic is what was faulty. Cost a couple of hundred from memory.
    Just drop the rear tank and replace it and change the middle filter (between the two tanks) and you should hopefully be done.

        Yes!!!! When I fill up the fuel does appear frothy etc. I think it was the pump between the two tanks that they replaced today. So, is that what your referring to or is this fuel jet pump different. They showed me photos of the pump they replaced (that pumps fuel from the reserve tank into the main tank) today. The filter was clogged completely with black grease. Ill look into the diagram when I get a chance. Thanks for your help. It sounds like what describing.

          Depends what they changed. Should tell you on the invoice and by the price of it.

          The pump itself is in the main tank under the left rear (not back) seat, it has the fuel sender and pump that runs all the time to transfer fuel between the tanks. It costs a small fortune so you would know if that's what they changed. May have been a clogged fuel filter, there's one between the two tanks. You can see it if you crawl under the drivers side up above the driveshaft. Will have orangish plastic clips connecting the pipes to it. It's about 8cm long or so which is more than likely what they have replaced. Think there's about $70-$80 odd from toyota. number 2330J in the top right of the pic above. If they have replaced the jet pump thing then it is in the rear tank and is in the middle square of the pic above. Mine cost $177 a few years ago. Both filter and or the rear system could cause the fuel blockage.

            black grease? is that from bad pump fuel? or from off road environment contamination?
