As an auto elec and vehicle outfitter I deal with a lot of different brands and gear lots of different opinions... Autobarn used to sell a cheap UHF brand called Oricom. These were junk... terrible! I had a 50% failure rate going with units I'd install.
That got replaced with a new brand a couple of years ago... Crystal. So far, no failures. Speaking with a rep from the distributor, he told me that the boards from the all the fixed install radios and their two 5w handheld UHFs are coming from the same factory and using the same boards as what goes into the iCom UHFs. But their range of 1watt and under handhelds are junk from another factory.
The rep who informed me of this is not known for telling tall stories, so I'm inclined to believe that he is telling me what he is told... anyone know anymore about this? If that's the case, my old Sundowner is on its last legs and the Crystal remote mount is looking like a good replacement.
Any thoughts?
