  • Exide batteries from Costco

Anyone bought Exide batteries from Costco? Are they any good?

My current Supercharge Gold (MF80D26) is now 6 years old. Very happy with it. The life is probably attributed to 40min drives. A replacement costs $165 (36mth wty). The equivalent NS70/N50ZZ from Costco is $125 (30mth wty).

Hopefully the new design is better than the old. I charged mine every 3 months and drove the car every day. I only got 2 years and 4 months out of my Overlander.

I just bought a century battery on the wkend (NS70) which was $200 bucks with a 25% discount from Supercheap! Battery world were selling the same battery for about $260.
Strangely enough the factory battery on my Chrysler 300 has lasted 11yrs & I've only just changed it over.

SuperCharge are usually a fair price. I have installed 5 SuperCharge Gold batteries over the years. I may still purchase SuperCharge batteries for our city cars BUT I WILL NEVER PUT A SUPERCHARGE IN AN OUTBACK CAR.

                  Why, do you ask?

For our recent trip, I replaced our 3 year old SuperCharge with a brand new SuperCharge so that we would be sure that the battery would hold up on our 6 week outback trip. We drove for many km across NT and WA, and the battery started to LEAK at the negative post near Fitzroy Crossing. We drove on to Halls Creek and rang SuperCharge to find a battery solution. NO SOLUTION!

We went to Halls Creek Toyota and bought a new battery for the Prado. Left the SuperCharge at Halls Creek for SuperCharge to inspect it, but they will not. On the phone, they claimed that they re unable to help without the battery being taken to a SuperCharge dealer, and there is no dealer within useful distance from Halls Creek.

Generally a crack like that occurs due to over tightening of the terminal, bashing the terminal on with a spanner or the battery not being secured bouncing and impacting with the car which can happen to any battery. Or maybe another battery was sat on it in the shop and you didnt notice the crack?

But being offroad is no issue for these batteries, i've run them in several boats and given them an absolute beating in big seas and nasty squalls offshore. In the ally boats especially i've had many bone jarring impacts like being dropped 2 meters on to cement, and even split the welds in the boat but the batteries were fine.

Marine is a pretty harsh environment for batteries, they get physically bashed around, saltwater, weeks of infrequent use over winter, running high powered sounders/chartplotter, radio, lights, nmea2k network, live bait tank, bilge, deep drop electric reels etc for hours with the engine off. Frequently cranking the engine with short runs when doing drifts over a reef etc.

I've never had a SuperCharge fail early and normally replace them after 6-7 years for peace of mind and not because they no longer work. I've had a couple of Century's tap out after the 3.5yr mark, and various other cheaper brands tap out earlier. Anyway SuperCharge are a great battery for the price, sorry to hear you had premature damage to yours however it happened.

This crack is not due to overtighting the terminal, bashing the terminal on with a spanner, or the battery not being secured! None of that is the way I install batteries.

The negative terminal is connected to the inner mudguard with a short heavy cable. There is some minor flex between the battery and the inner guard due to offroad and over bumps etc. The terminal has to sustain that movement by having adequate support from the upper casing of the battery. Our previous SuperCharge had no problem like the new one, and I installed it in the exactly same manner.

The new SuperCharge had a manufacturing fault that I think is an error in the thickness of the top plate around the negative terminal. There was no sign of the battery moving on the bracket, and the latest replacement battery from Halls Creek Toyota has had no fail over rough ground and installed again by myself. I know how to install batteries.

Sorry to have to disagree, but this was a manufacturing fault. Manufacturing faults can happen, but when a manufacturer wipes their hands off it for a customer in the outback, they lose reputation from me at least, and I am happy to warn PP users of this result.

So the way a warranty works is in the first instance you return the product to the sellar as that is who the sales contract is with. Fortunately manufacturers offer warranty through their dealer network as an alternatively. Unfortunately supercharge obviously don't have a dealer in Halls creek. I assume many battery manufacturers have a similar problem. Fortunately for you there was a battery resellar available to get a replacement from. It was stated that the battery failure was a manufacturing fault and the manufacturer was prepared to deal with the problem if you got the battery to their dealer. I don't think Supercharge did anything that would be outside of the contract between the purchaser and manufacturer. I assume you may find a similar problem with your new battery not having a dealer in every town in Aust. I don't expect to find either century or fullriver ( the batteries in my car) in every town and that is a risk you take when you travel. It is also why I prefer to drive a Toyota for dealer network and fitted out by ARB as they have a broad dealer network.

                          I agree with you rags.

A SuperCharge failure is fixable in metro areas. SuperCharge denied offering any support for a battery failure out of the dealer network. That is their choice, and it makes my choice easier. No more of them for us in the outback.

Halls Creek Toyota claim their battery is replaceable anywhere in the country, hopefully we don't have to! Comparing the structure of the top plate while installing it, the new battery looked to have a better structural top. It certainly hasn't had any problem, and it has had at least as much shock and vibration as the previous SuperCharge.

I have SuperCharge "All rounders" servicing the fridges from under the hood, 1@ 80ah and 1@ 105ah.
Along with a SuperCharge Gold Plus 720 CCA doing the starting duties.
The A frame of the camper also carries a 105ah All rounder to run the water pump and lights, this one came out of the Prado when the previous "dirty-leaky" trailer deep cycle was finally ditched.
No complaints or dramas so far with the Super Charge brand.
This thread high lights the need to check battery terminal condition and tighness as well as the mounting system.
Long runs on corrigations or rough rocky fun can shift things about as discovered this week playing in the Flinders Ranges.
The warranty statement on my battries say that Super charge will replace any defected battery if delivered to one of their dealers, via owners cost.
                            Cheers

                              Last reply.

I mounted the battery, it did not move a millimetre. The post was unable to cope with vibration and the casing failed. End of story.

No more SuperCharge in the outback for me. Happy to continue to use them in the metro areas.
