  • Hey all,

    Another update for those of you waiting on the c-spanner/shock tool.

    Ironman are out of stock, and I'm waiting on a factory production run and shipment, so at this stage it looks like mid-October before I will get my mits on them.

    In the meantime for those of you who are waiting on the c-spanner and who need a front ride height adjustment, keep in mind you can do a standard removal and disassembly of the strut and adjust the collars off the vehicle. If you prefer not to have to do this, and want to adjust in-situ on-vehicle, just let me know and I'll put you in contact with another PP member in your area who does have a c-spanner. At the moment there are members in all the major cities who have c-spanners!

    The second the c-spanners come I'll post them out!

        You mentioned 2.6t on the video - what did you have in the back - bags of concrete?!

          With no fuel in its current trim the car weighs 2150kg. Then it was setup for at least a week of self sufficiency. So in comes 192L of fuel, 60L of water, heavier play wheels, second spare wheel, tools, other spares, food for 2 people, camping gear, recovery gear, air comp, miscellaneous stuff. And two people. In fact at the beginning the weight was around 2.7t. By the time we reached Big Red the second fuel tank was nearly empty so minus approx 80kg, minus some water and food, hence approx 2.6t.

            Hey,

            2.6t for an FJ in the desert is still on the light side. I know FJ's that weigh 2.4t as city vehicles.

            A loaded up Prado in remote desert setup can easily reach 3t and be over gvm.

              • Ah awesome, made it look pretty easy. The interesting part for me are the bumps on the bottom runups....seen plenty a vehicle airborne and / or nose diving along there. Its hard to tell from the footage, as to how big the bumps were, but they looked to be cycled out in one suspension cycle.

                As for weight.... i think most people (grossly?) underestimate their riding mass. My FJ is 2.38 T on the weighbridge totally empty. Put in 150 kg fuel, mud tyres and GU rims, fridge, then tools and recovery gear, then 4 people... and gear and food and water for those 4 people and i honestly dont want to think how much over GVM i was in the Simpson. No room for cement, but im still cleaning out red sand 1 year later.

                  Watching this video now I agree that the climbs look almost effortless, although two other vehicles I was travelling with couldn't make it. As well as a number of other cars there at the time. When we arrived to Big Red we saw a LC ute unsuccessfully trying to climb the second (on the video) track. The guy made no less than 5-6 attempts. Eventually he made it, perhaps being annoyed by my FJ

                  The first (on the video) track was Ok in terms of bumps. They were more or less random, that's why the car goes relatively smoothly with the suspension mostly swallowing the bumps. The second track was worse. The bumps at the bottom were quite large and regular, you wouldn't normally go over them with the speed that I went. They caused the back of the car go up and down 3-4 times quite significantly as seen in the footage. I'm still not sure if the rear wheels were in the air, but the front always stayed on the ground.

                  No matter how hard I try to reduce the weight of the remote outback setup, I still add around 600kg. I wish I could shed a couple of hundreds off that but I don't think it's possible unless I start sacrificing safety or comfort (which is almost at its minimum anyway!)

                  • Hi all, so I've now installed my kit as well - thanks, Mark!

                    Mine is Kings KTFR101H in the front and Dobbos C59-327 in the rear. Ride heights are now 775 mm in the front and 820-822 mm in the rear with a near-full load of fuel. That's probably a little lower than I was expecting in the rear - will be checking to see if it settles any further over time, hopefully it won't move too much! The fronts I will adjust up to 790mm when the c-spanner arrives.

                    For the benefit of others with a similar setup, in the front atm I have an ARB Deluxe bar with a Domin8r winch, and a second battery in the ARB mount on the passenger side. I set the front struts to 210 mm coil length, which has given me that 775 mm, so I'd guess that with the 2:1 ratio between the strut and the ride height, probably a good starting height for people with a similar setup would be around 220mm coil length.

                    The ride is great - maybe a little firmer than std, but not significantly. As others have said, it corners better now :-)

                    The installation did take me a while, but I didn't have a helper. One silly mistake I made was not pulling the front shock out to full extension before trying to install it (not being gas, it didn't go there automatically). I spent some time wondering why the amts method wasn't working for me before I realised my mistake :-)

                    Mark mentioned a 7mm spanner for the flats on the rear shock, and said it was a bit big. I found an old cheapie 6mm spanner in my toolbox that fitted perfectly.

                    One issue I do have that I don't recall others mentioning is that at full flex (or nearly so - see pics) the rear shock body comes into contact with the lower control arm. Has anyone else had this, and does anyone have any thoughts on whether it's likely to be an issue?

                    Tim

                    • Hey Tim,

                      Great flex photos!

                      I haven't seen binding issues on the lower oem trailing arms before around 620mm open. I have checked the 670mm open length Ironmans out at full flex on the rear of a Prado, and they just clear my larger diameter Superior arms at full articulation.

                      It won't be an issue, might rub some paint off. Both the shock and the trailing arm will flex/give a little on their respective bushes.

                      Just keep an eye on it and keep me posted!

                        • Hey again Tim,

                          Here's a few shots of the 670mm 45682LFE shocks flexed out on the rear of my 120;

                          Side on view of the articulated side showing the shock body-trailing arm gap closing up. It looks like it is touching;

                          However, close inspection from the top shows there is a few millimetres worth of gap;

                          This is on the drooped side with full articulation, and the gap is between the 670mm 45682LFE and my Superior offset trailing arms, which are a larger diameter than the OEM arms.

                          As your OEM arms appear to have shifted over more than what I expected, it may be worth inspecting the state of the OEM trailing arm bushes. They do tear, particularly the uppers, and end up flexing more than they normally would.

                          In any case, the worst you'll do is rub a bit of paint off!

                          • Hi Mark,

                            Been meaning to send you an email all week, my kit arrived last Friday (just over a week ago). Haven't had a chance to open all the boxes and check it out yet but the one front strut that I did look at is a solid piece of kit.

                            Cheers, Nova

                                An update from my garage!

                                John is back from holidays, and I'm waiting on stock from Ironman, hopefully it will arrive early next week! I will be finishing the last batch on the list as quickly as possible, as Ironman prices will be changing from the end of this month.
