Was expecting a much rougher ride, but rides beautifully. Couldn't resist the speed bump test, we have a couple of doozies on our road, and it's gone from bucking and wallowing to just a smooth ride. Can't wait to use these on the corrugations up north, fully loaded up with a camper used to be all over the place, should be sweet now.

Thanks again Mark for your knowledge and generosity in pulling this together.
    Hey Steve,

Great to hear you got it all in and that it has worked out ride height wise and that you're enjoying the ride!

    That rear should settle in!

To hopefully accelerate this process today I have had it sitting in the garage with a heap of weight added to the rear - trailer- 80kg, 40 l of water, and another 30-40 kg of assorted crap. All up about 150 kg [plus full tanks]. This has it sitting at 830 mm. The question is how much are springs likely to sag and over what time period? Does added weight help the process? At the moment it is above the legal 50 mm lift at the rear when empty.
The fronts with C59-352 are sitting at between 800 and 805 after 6 days- close to ideal and 45 mm above where it was when new.
As to handling....sensational- no more pitch, sway, squat, and greatly reduced roll. Ride is firm but not harsh. A particular speed hump near me has apparently been stolen!
      Hey Neil,

I'm hoping that rear height comes down as well! You are doing the right thing by loading it up during their break in settling period. Hopefully you'll see it come down at least 10mm.

How much a coil sags/settles in ride height terms can be a problematic thing to understand, as you can see very large ride height reductions, then pull the coil out and the free height won't have changed. There are changes in the torsional modulus of the steel as the steel ages under load cycling, and some of the plasticised microstructure in the steel grain can be annealed out over time by load cycling/moderate thermal cycling, ie coils getting cold and warm. When the coil is initially made, after tempering and peening it is scragged to near its working height, meaning it is compressed down until it is at the height it will be for your vehicle ride height for the rear (typically quoted for a 2" lift). During scragging, the coil is held at its working height for a sustained period of time, which generates a memory of where the coil wants to be at ride height.

As that microstructure in the coil is annealed out during load cycling/thermal cycling, the coil "forgets" where it needs to be at working height, and you see a reduction in your ride height, which most people incorrectly call coil sag. However, pull that coil out of the vehicle and you won't see any change in its free height!

So the more load cycling you do on the coils, the faster they will "sag" = ride height reduction.

For the coil bucket separation at the 620mm open length of the rear 45682 Ironman, 410mm is the minimum free height I prefer to use so that you definitely won't see any coil drop out/twist at full articulation. To match the rear valving, we need 260-280lb/in coils, which means the C59-327 is an ideal coil.

Unfortunately that lighter GX weight in the rear is currently lifting too high with the 327.

I think you should give it some settling time and some driving kilometres, and if it doesn't come down enough, we can look at other options. I can revalve your rears to a higher compression curve (around 1600N at 0.52m/s) which will allow a much softer rear coil rate (something like 230lb/in), so if things don't work out we can look at that down the track. Something like the C59-325 at 220lb/in and 420mm free height will work nicely.

Either way we'll get that naughty high GX rear ride height sorted out!

Awesome. The ride is firm, but not harsh. Better control over bumps than any of the suspension previously had on the Prado! The valving brings the Prado very compliant, and the previous dive under brakes is gone, and control around corners has the Prado running very flat. Ran the Prado along a dirt track in the hills which had some deep drains across the track and the suspension just soaked it up. This will be an awesome outback setup now. They look, they measure, and I bet, they are stronger than any shock I have had previously.

Will let the suspension settle while waiting for the Ironman shock spanners, then adjust them and put it in for it's wheel alignment.
        Hey,

Good to hear you are tearing up the streets of Adelaide!!

The Ironman Pros are indeed an extremely robust shock absorber, and if you break one it means you've put wings on your Prado and tried to launch it off a skyscraper!

Those c-spanners are coming, they are taking forever, but they will arrive soon...I hope!

I installed my suspension last night, having a mechanic as a mate with a hoist at home is handy!
The set up has totally transformed the car!!! On the road it feels like a sports car, no pitching, Minimal body roll around round abouts, no diving under brakes, handles long fast sweeping bends like they arnt even there. The car is so much nicer to drive, firm, planted and more responsive.
I took it for a belt down some very un maintained roads and was just laughing. It really came into its own here....hitting pot holes didnt have the car pitching and sounding like you had to put half the dash back together. Even had to swerve to miss a wombat and didnt feel out of control for a second.
Time to get an alignment, let it settle for a few weeks and see it any adjustments need to be made.
One very very happy customer!!! Worth the wait, worth every cent and more. Thanks Whitey your a bloody legend!!!!!!!!!

Great to hear you've finally got the gear under the Prado and enjoying it, you are a patient man!

Love the review, even a wombat in there, glad he's still in one piece, good driving on those Ironmans!!

Whitey's revalved shocks and struts, along with new coils and swaybar fittings were installed last Thursday.
The ride is great and I appear to have better control whilst driving as well. Much less body roll too.
The lift I wanted is perfect.
Thanks Mark for the great products, fantastic service and your suspension specialist recommendation.
                  Very pleased.

Looking forward to hearing how that beast goes off road!

                      Hey Mark
Are the front struts long enough to allow for a 2.5-3" lift while still allowing enough down travel???
                      Cheers Josh

                        Hey Josh,

The 45710FE struts come standard 432-565mm. I add 4mm of shaft spacers to make them 436-569mm, and that is the maximum I'm prepared to do, as the oem balljoint binds up at 575mm.

Optimal droop on 570mm struts (or longer) occurs around 790-800mm ride height, around 40-45mm of lift. Lift over that and you'll start to lose droop in a 1:1 ratio.

You can of course run a higher lift, as the 45710FE body is threaded, so for 60mm of lift expect around 70mm of droop on 570mm open length.

                              Hey,

Don't have a pik handy, but it's quite simple, just a couple of washers that sit on top of the shroud spacer which slips over the shaft. You can use the same technique on any strut or shaft, you just need to be very aware of what the closed length is!

                                Hey all,

Revalving of 11-15 on the list is going well, and the total number of struts and shocks I have revalved so far is now up to 54. A big half century, that has been a Hussey like working class innings!

I have also revalved some 105 series Landcruiser front shocks for a nice bloke I know!
