Question. Should we be aiming for a particular ride height on installation given that it will settle after some time?

    thanks again
    Hey Justin,

Hopefully after it all settles in you'll end up with around a 790-800mm ride height on the front. It will take a little bit of driving to settle it in, and with the IFS scaling the settling by roughly x2 at wheel position, the ride height settling from first bounce to finally settled can be anything up to 40mm, so don't be surprised to see it up high initially around 830mm or so, as it will quickly reduce.

        • I had my first opportunity to try the suspension out offroad in the Grampians region on the weekend. As expected, it handled everything i threw at it brilliantly. In fact, it temped me into a false sence of security that i was throwing the car into obstacles much faster than i probably wanted to. Was particularly impressed when i got air off a woopty, and landed on front drivers side first, and didnt bottom out the suspension. Particularly outstanding is how it handled medium obstacles and gutters etc. For the slow full articulation it was also fine; barely slipping wheels.

What i did notice was how sensitive the handling and ride is to tyre pressure. Normally i ran my LT muddies 44 psi on road. Thats too hard for the new suspension, activating slight undulations in the road. I found 38 psi to be the magic pressure. Normally i would run 20 psi off road; as i was doing a mix of 4x4 tracks, high speed gravel, and tarmac, i ran 30 psi and the handling was just like lower pressures but without the sideways floating of low tyre pressures. That seems to be mixing the compression damping of the shocks with the effective compression damping of the tyres.... maybe Mark has some thoughts on that.

All in all, very happy i replaced a perfectly good Bilstein setup with the custom Ironmans; which i only did because i experienced some fading in the rear in the Simpson with the Bilsteins and also had driven in Marks Prado.

          • Hey all,

Yesterday I re-valved the very last strut I had in stock, so it's spanners down in my garage for a while!

The spare set I had has also been gobbled up, so thanks for all the interest!

              • All I can say is WOW. Had my new "Whitey" suspension installed today. What a difference. Was worried about harshness but damn, what a ride. Firm but smooth at the same time.
Cornering is pure fun. My Prado is a totally different beast now. Can't wait to head out bush again. Dude, you nailed it. Thank you.

Haha, not quite the wild mate. Just out the front of my joint. Having said that, my unsealed, steep, rutted out driveway is a great test for any car.

                      • Yet another positive result from Whitey's Group buy! I was the lucky recipient of one of the last sets of shocks due to a cancelled order. Thought I had missed the boat but the shockie gods were on my side. The result? The same as what everyone else has stated in this thread. A total transformation with handling beyond what I expected. Thanks goes of course to Whitey for sharing his knowledge and hard work in developing what is a bloody good, strong shock into a bloody fantastic shock. On Whitey's advice we opted on the Dobinson 352's up front and we replaced the Grande Airbags in the rear with amts 120ABHD Coil conversion springs which Andrew shipped up to me in record time (Thanks Mate) We also installed the Firestone airbags to assist when carrying heavier loads.
A few pics of Whitey's handy work...
