  • What Brand Diesel?

About a year ago a friend at work did a test and found that the "Special Diesel" offered by 7 Eleven got him the best economy. He has a small diesel car.

Now I have a Diesel Prado I'm wondering what I should put in it. I haven't had to put fuel in it yet.

Is there a best diesel fuel to use?

BP Ultimate is preferred by most, closely followed by Caltex Vortex but others don't care and use the cheapest

BP Ultimate works well for me (and easy to find) but also Shell seemed OK. Both seems 'froth resistant' also.

Bp Ultimate. Apparently according to a oil/fuel expert the fuel BP uses is fresher and less aged than other suppliers as it all comes from the same refinery. As fuel ages it loses its cetane rating. So BP would most likely have the highest cetane rating.

Isn't Mobile just BP fuel with a colour additive?

7 eleven are now using Mobile fuels

It looks like 7 Eleven uses the "Special Diesel" from Mobil.

Does anyone notice a mileage difference using different fuels or is it just about how pure of clean the fuel is?

I ran my Prado on bp fuel.
One time I had to fill up at a Puma station and every small incline on the way home (400km) the temp gauge spiked.
Ran it down and filled up with bp and all good again.
Spoke to a few guys that deliver fuel and they all said the cheaper stations fuel always looked like water.
                  Never again using cheap shit.

Most fuel in a particular area comes from the same or a couple of terminals. In Perth it comes from BP Kwinana refinery and is pumped to Coogee terminal and most companies pull their fuel from there. I think Viva (Shell) import their fuel over there. In Darwin the fuel is all imported and everyone pulls their fuel from the Vopak terminal. In both these situations the fuel all comes out of the same tanks.

Qld, Vic and NSW it either comes from a refinery or is imported. E.g. In Brisbane Caltex has the only refinery and it supplies Fuel to BP as well. Others like Freedom and Shell import their fuel. There are lots of swaps that go on between the companies when one or the other runs short, or in locations where they don't have storage, they just buy from another company that does and put it in their retail outlets. Also, some of the trading houses that import fuel sell it to multiple companies. So in some regional centres you might have a couple of the majors getting fuel off the same boat.

The premium stuff that gets sold under a brand name mainly contains detergents to clean your engine and is basically the same detergent chemical used by all the majors and sourced from only a couple of suppliers. There are some other 'herbs and spices' or formula variations to differentiate and justify the marketing. These additives and injected at the gantry where the trucks load up and are added to the base product (petrol or diesel) that is Australian spec but could have come from anywhere.

There is a fair bit of gunk that sits at the bottom of tanks so you don't want to be filling up from a servo that is very low on product because you could be sucking some of this gunk into your car. Most metro servos are kept well topped up so the big risk of that is when travelling out in the middle of nowhere.

Also, the detergents added to the premium products stirs up this gunk, so those tanks would have been cleaned and polished when converted from standard product to the premium stuff.

In saying all that, I put BP Ultimate in my new Prado.

The rather inconsistent quality and availability of fuel in more remote areas adds value to the 150 (or 180) litre tanks.

Looks like majority of owners here use BP Ultimate.
I just filled up a day or two ago at Costco for $1.11 so for that one tank the savings was around $9-$10 compared to BP now if u do that over 12 months the savings actually build up. I havent heard anyone say a bad think about costco fuel yet so not sure if i would be changing over to BP anytime soon. The one time i did fill up BP i dont think i go the same mileage as costco diesel.

I usually have for the last 5 years, various vehicles, filled up with the local Hills servos (Mobile distributors) or the 7/11. They are usually 10 to 15Cents per Litre cheaper and we have not had any trouble. Nor noticed any loss in mileage or performance.

The owners manual for the new 1GD diesel engine states to use Diesel with a Cetane rating of at least 48 from memory.
When I did a search, it seemed to me that Caltex Vortex Diesel had the highest Cetane rating at 55, which was surprising as most seem to prefer BP ultimate Diesel.
