    Hi all
I've just bought a 2013 SX 3 door. It has an ECB alloy bulbar and 2nd battery under the bonnet. The back end has airbag helpers but other than that the suspension is stock. We have a 12' offroad van (about 1.25t 100kg on the ball) that we will cart around behind it - but haven't yet. I would really appreciate advice/opinions from people about the sorts of modifications I should maybe apply for this setup. I don't need a lift really, I want to retain comfort, I don't want the back end sagging. We don't go off-road but do go rough-road. If there are other threads please point me at them. I have used Koni shocks on a ute before and have a good opinion of them. I don't mind paying for something that is going to be good.
    cheers

      Hey mate,
Just installed outback armour, 2inch lift and a set of air bags in the rear.

the fronts i went with heavy duties (Bar, dual battery, winch to come),
the rear are normal duty, as the car is typical empty around town.

I've been stoked with the ride and comfort.
Around town and empty the car is great to drive, firm, but comfortable.

With it loaded up like our recent trip, we filled the bags with 30psi to level the car out and it felt great. you still feel the extra weight, but the car is level and feels better.

      Well worth considering.

Whole kit was 1800. i fitted it myself in a day and was very easy as the struts come pre-assmbled. Makes it easy.

Check out the photos and write up if your interested.

Very interesting - well done. Thanks for that - the idea of standard duty on the back makes sense.
        thanks

            Hi suitcase,

            I have a late 2009 155SX that I tow a hard floor camper trailer.

The SX is completely stock except for a second battery under the bonnet and Polyair bags in the rear coils and a tow bar.

No bull bar and I don't travel at night.

I haven't weighed it yet but the Tare weight for the trailer is listed as 750kg and it probably has an extra 200kg in touring trim. There is probably another 200 kg of fridge, food, water , diesel and tools, snatch strap and shackles and jacking plate in the Prado.

Standard tyres and wheels. Nothing on the roof.

We have done several trips through the Flinders Ranges, Oodnadatta track, Dalhousie and Mt Dare, Finke and the West Macdonald ranges and up to Darwin via Katherine, Kakadu and Litchfield. Certainly a lot of very rough and corrugated roads in all of that.

I only have the Polyairs because this camper is a bit heavier on the ball and it brings the car back to level.

As your van is only 1.2T and 100kg on the ball you should have no trouble towing it with your stock suspension even if it does sag a little in the back. Try a few short trips and see what you want to fix before you change everything. A set of bags in the rear coils may be all you need.

            Welcome to the Shorty club,

            S.

Thanks for that sweetpea. We towed the van a couple of hours up the road last weekend. It does sag a little in the back but not a lot.
With the airbags is it just a matter of adding air after loading to bring the height back to the unladen height? About what pressure do you put in yours?
I certainly don't want to change the height of the vehicle overall - my wife's too short for that. Really appreciate your comments.
The Prado certainly has different ride characteristics to the old Rodeo dual cab.
              cheers

You already have helper airbags in the rear. You should use it.

                    Great.

I run about 5 psi unloaded because that is what the Polyair instructions told me to do.

Polyair also said to inflate before adding load so when it is to be loaded I put about 10-15 psi in and then load it up.

If it looks about right then all is good but if it is too low I drop the jockey wheel on the camper and raise the back of the car and add a few more PSI. Drop the jockey wheel and see how it sits. Then rinse and repeat till I am happy.

Since I don't have a big load in the car and the trailer is fairly light and I haven't raised the centre of gravity with a lift it is all very easy and not very precise.

I'm off up the Hume next week for a few days and I plan to put the trailer over the free weigh-bridge near Broadford and see what he trailer weighs and measure the ball weight.

How on earth do you measure 5psi?
btw. just rang the airbagman and I now have a manual for my airbags.
                      cheers

Digital bicycle gauge. I run the fat bike tyres down to 3 or 4psi. Use the same gauge on the polyairs

Thanks mjrandom. Learn something new every day. Supercheap also have a low pressure tyre gauge I've just found out. Might even go and buy a bike pump.

Nuther question if I may for sweatpea et al (and anyone with airbags). Where (and how) have you got your valves placed. Mine have been mounted through the plastic bumper about 6 inches behind the mudflap. Seems to me like this asking to have a rock hit it. I'm thinking I might need to change the position.
                              cheers

On my 120 I made up a little bracket and had them behind the little cutout in the middle of the bumper [ not there on the 150]
