Everyone needs to complain about the 6th gear. Its almost pointless having it. Iv'e had all the updates and no change. Complained to Toyota direct and told its normal and no one is complaining. Dealership said only way something would get done is if a lot of people complain about it.

    Thanks

    G'day,
I had the update done some time ago, my problem was a bad change when cold. The update fixed it for a while.
As far as 6th gear goes, the update had some effect on that, it will lock up at lower speeds, but will unlock at the drop of a hat.
I have told my dealer the transmission is not good at every service.
Having said that, it's a good transmission for driving in the NT, sitting on 130, it changes less.

Ah sounds like the same issue they had on the 200 series. Top gear was useless unless you were travelling at 130km/h. Was eventually fixed 2 or so years later after being released by a firmware update.

      Thanks

      • It really needs a 'current gear indicator' like the Mazda6

        • My thoughts are, Prado's weigh 2.5 tonne on average, have a smallish 2.8 litre engine, with a 6 speed auto. All that is fine, but the moonshot gearing is the problem.....way to tall for that engine to carry the weight. Top gear i think should have the engine spinning at around the 1800-2k rpm at 100km/h........If i keep ours long enough, I'd like to investigate lowering the final drive ratio before any power mods, would make a massive difference i reckon.
          Cheers.

          • I don't think low range is all that low either so could you just opt for diff gears

That all said if they want heat to clean the DPF we'll load at low rpm will do it

            • Well, 7000km's after the ECU upgrade and after using the car no differently (well, actually, I've left the 30kg's worth of recovery gear out of it for the past 2000km) my computer is showing an average of using 0.6L/100km more than it did before the upgrade. Seems fairly similar according to some on here.

I wonder - does this change the official ADR rating of the car? Or (I suspect not) does the testing even run long enough for a DPF burn to occur?

              • Yes my is the same using 0.5l of diesel more than before. Not happy with this.I will be writing to Toyota with complaints ,and suggest everybody effected do the same.
This is very good reason for class action if not resolved to our satisfaction. We were mislead about the car real fuel consumption when buying

                • Hi all,

Just got my 2016 (I think Mar build) 20k service done on Thursday, had the ecu "recall" done as well . Didn't know until I picked it up. Asked what's this and the response was it was to adjust some parameters with the DPF. Didn't dig too deep into the details but it seems to be running smoother. Who knows if that's the cause but I guess it's a wait and see sort of thing. Can't say I'm too happy with the fuel economy either. It's around 12/13 as well but I think that's just my leadfoot wife!

                  • Just got the reprogram done today at 50k service. First impressions: idle down to 800 from 900rpm; flat out acceleration from lights showed over 90L / 100km (I have never seen such figures, even towing a 2.5t camper) ; seems to show lower L / 100km when at cruising speed; seems to lock into 6th nicely.
Time will tell if it's any better overall.

                    • Toyota did my 2016 Kakadu (July build) today in its 40k service. Noticeable different in power and gear shifting. I complained to Toyota at 20k service about the gear changes particularly going from 5th to 6th (or more like the lack of it wanting to change.) At the time they didn't really want to hear about it and made up an excuse that it was normal.
With the ECU reprogrammed it changed much smother and earlier.
I've never reseted our mileage since new and our average over 40k is 10.1/100. That's with no extra accessories added to the vehicle.

                      • Had mine done at 58000km around two weeks ago. The fuel consumption is now 11.6L, about 0.5-1L more than before. Only had Deluxe bullbar, spotlight, Thule cross bar on the roof and Cooper AT3. 40% suburb road, 30% Adelaide hill country road and 30% freeway roughly. Probably the update is more for city driving??
Not impressed with the mileage but It does seem smoother than before, especially after dealer's car wash?? (CMI ADELAIDE CBD) I always find it quieter after I do a thorough wash at home. Can't understand how it happens.
About occasional black smoke, the dealer said it is normal for a diesel car. So I will see if the frequency gets higher in the future. So do I need to worry about it financially when I have the factory extended warranty, about 4.5 years left in total.

Yes, black smoke and diesel engines go hand-in-hand, but a diesel engine with a DPF shouldn't show any black smoke if the DPF is functioning correctly. That is the point of it.

                          • I have a 2015 2.8ltr Prado which I bought new. It was running at 8.9ltrs/100km as per the dash read out and since having this ECU reprogrammed at my last service 60,000kms fuel consumption has jumped to 9.6ltrs/100km, same driving, same driver, same tyre pressures.

                            • Couple of observations regarding fuel consumption;
                              1. The Prado is a 2.4T 4WD and it will use more fuel than a 1.4T car designed for urban use, that's just basic physics.
                              2. The dash readout is highly unreliable.

                              • The l/100km dash readout display is NOT an accurate fuel flow readout, it is estimated from throttle position, engine load etc...it is not actual fuel flow readout...so in some instances it can be very close to reality, and then in other instances it can be quite inaccurate..I don't use it anymore, I use a SCANGUAGE 2, which you calibrate with every fill up...best way is to actually log the fuel you use and calculate against actual klm traveled, but not just after one or two fill-ups, you need to work it out over a reasonable distance to average any errors etc.
Having said that 9.6/.100 km is probably closer to reality for real world driving rather than the 8.9 l/100km you were seeing...but who knows, don't bother looking at the l/100km display on the dash....just keep track of actual fuel used and klm traveled.
