  • Connie Sue Highway Trip

Just completed a trip down the Connie Sue , one of Len Beadells roads, from Warburton to Rawlinna.
Trip is around 642kms with another 100 or so to get to Cocklebiddy.
My car is a 2005 GXL with 3.0 diesel engine KZ-FTE , fuel consumption was 11.47li/100 due to the slow going so 102 litres of fuel from Warburton ( fuel price $2.06per litre) to Cocklebiddy( Fuel price$ 1.68per litre).
Tyres were General Grabber AT2's which I ran at 22psi( no punctures or any vehicle issues)
The track from Warburton to Neale Junction ( toilet and rainwater available) is VERY corrugated and tough going , everything shakes ( I cracked both spotlight mounts ) with rocky sections and a couple of washaways .
Nothing that taking it easy, you can't negotiate. The last 45kms into Neales is much easier , mainly sand .
From Neale Junction south a veritable highway 65-75KPH..no problems.
If you want to do the entire Connie Sue be aware that this very good road swings west approx. 106kms north of Rawlinna , the Connie Sue is straight ahead and deteriorates to a track but not that bad.
From Rawlinna, which is the end of the Connie Sue , you have a choice of going directly south to Cocklebiddy or drive East for 75kms to Haig and then head south to the Eyre Highway ( there's a signpost)
We took the Haig option after being told by a traveller coming from the South the direct road was a"shocker" and there is a maze of station tracks. ( on Hema maps this is marked as a private road) The Haig road had some water, and rocky sections but nothing difficult , no bogholes or corrugations, we averaged 30kmh.
Theres about 10 gates to open and close.
There's not a huge amount to see along the way. Some interesting breakaways , lots of camels , a few dingoes, some ruins at the old Premier Downs station and that's about it .I guess the achievement is in the doing.
A few observations, you need to be totally self sufficient ( a recovery service does operate out of Laverton if you're really stuck) Good tyres and correct pressures are vital ( everyone knows this ). A reliable vehicle ( that's why I've got a Prado) that's had a pre trip check done will easily do the trip..fresh water is available at two points on the Connie Sue itself as well as Warburton so don't take too much( keep the weight down )

Nice one. It's a beautiful part of the country. We did the Connie Sue, Sandy Blight Junction Rd and Gary Junction Rd a couple of years ago.
