  • What's the best 2nd battery to fit in 150????

Hi guys, what is the best deep cycle that will fit in a 150? I was considering an Optima gold top........ does anyone have any opinions on this? I was thinking of something around 100ah if possible because I run a 60ltr Engel. Cheers Dean

It all depends where you are fitting it and how you are charging it. Bit more info needed

These are pretty good. I run two of them under the bonnet. Combined deep cycle / starter with 3 year under bonnet warranty.

Hi mjrandom, I want to fit it under the bonnet, and I have a Redarc bcdc 1225 solar compatible charger. I have got it setup already but I only have a normal battery installed as the auxiliary and wish to swap that one over to be the main battery and replace it with a deep cycle because my main battery has given up on me, any ideas would be appreciated. Cheers Dean

Hi drwormy, thanks for that info. which size batteries are you running? I'd like to run the biggest a/h possible without disturbing to much under the bonnet ie that pipe in the way. Also what price range are they? and where can I get one? Cheers Dean

The sizes will also depend on your tray and where you put it.

I have an FJ, with the sidewinder tray (same for FJ and P150). and am running a 82 AH as secondary and 105 AH as primary. The plan is to ditch the DC-DC charger and use an adjustable relay with Booster diode; set the relays disconnection voltage to 12.0 V (or thereabouts). That way ill effectively be treating the batteries as a 185 AH single battery bank, but with the start protected at ~ 50% capacity to start the car.

I got them off ebay ($230 and $299 from memory, 4x4extreme in SA).

Optima's Yellow Top only go up to around 75Ah I think, though you can use quite a lot of that capacity and aren't as limited to the same DOD as some other AGMs and all wetcells.
My D27F is a 66Ah but is heavy and large so doubt you'd want to go bigger under the bonnet.

You can buy an ozzie made isolator from Traxide (Drivesafe) that doest exactly as you require, plus it has the bonus of a switch to flick it back to a traditional isolator.

That's been handy for me as by Optima isnt well at the moment so I have isolated it from the cranker till I can load test it/replace it.
                  Cheers
