  • Thoughts on purchasing 2010 150 series 1KD please

    Howdy Prado Brains Trust!

Hoping you can share your experience and knowledge before I take the plunge and buy this Prado please? We've never owned a diesel car before and honestly after reading extensively through the forum I'm worried about the D4D engine. Im assuming the 1KD engine no. means it's D4D???

Am i worrying unnecessarily? Are these D4D problems widespread or does it come down to how well the car has been looked after/serviced? I've spoken to the mechanic workshop about this car and they said it's been regularly serviced every 10-15,000 kms and the timing belt, pulleys and tensioners done about 150,000km. It's nudging 180,000km. I asked about the injectors and they said it's not a normal service item and the owners have not raised any concerns with the car. The car has been used as a company car to date.

We tow a light weight van a couple of times a year, do some light 4wding and are planning some more trips to Central Australia so we feel this car suits our needs BUT should I be steering clear of this model??

Has anyone had any positive experiences with this model??

Please help, I need to learn all I can so we can make an educated decision that's right for our family.

    Thank you

    It's a great car and nothing to worry about provided you are aware;
    1. The injectors are a consumable item that should be replaced, some people say at 120k. It costs about $2500. You can get readings for the injectors to check the condition. There are some threads on these forums about the values.
    2. Sometimes you can get some rust under the back door seal.
    3. If it's got a tow ball I'd want to know how much towing it has done as this can over heat the gearbox. In the past I've rung the previous owner of cars to get the inside story.
There are probably a few other items, but its late.....

As above have stated. I would get cold injector feedback values on it first as 180,000 is well into there lifespan and not worth the risk if they are out of spec. Basically if it's anything near +/- 3 then they are shot or nearly shot and need to be replaced especially if you are going to tow. My originals lasted 180,000 and were just in spec when i changed them, but my 2nd set only lasted about 50,000k ???? don't know why.
Other than that, as long as the seats/seals on the base of the injectors aren't having blowby (can easily tell by looking at the oil pickup through the sump hole) you should be fine on those k's as long as it has had regular oil changes and general maintenance. You can usually tell the life a car has had by the amount of wear and tear things have.
I would though be looking at a cheaper price by arguing that the injectors will need changing and that is a $2,000 - $3,000 job depending on who does it. They will not have much life left in them if they are original no matter what the dealer says so just keep that in mind. If you get it for a good price then just get new ones put in and you will be very happy with these things.

Some people never have any problems, a guy I know is at 280k untouched including no injector replacement.

Others like myself have major failure, its luck of the draw, not only injectors to worry about!

Wow thank you so much for that information. I knew there was something about the injectors but I didn't know there was a way to actually measure it! That's brilliant! Can't thank you enough.

gspy42- Wow $2.5k I'll definitely get a mechanic to look at it before going ahead. And thanks for the tip about the rear door seal - I'll put that on my check off list too- thanks so much for your time & reply

I wouldn't panic. It is a well know issue and out of the 100s of thousands of Prados out there a small percentage have problems. You'll find different problems with all the makes and models. Just treat the injectors as something that needs to be replaced. My 2010 KD1 is running strong, but I do check the injector values regularly.
