  • Kings Flat Rack Installation

    Hi guys,

I am wondering if anyone has fitted a Kings Flat Rack to their 150 Prado?
The instructions seem ambiguous? I have roof rails like most Prado's and I don't seem to see how this fits without removing the rails.
From what I believe, isn't the roof rail delete quite in-depth?

I was under the impression these Kings Flat racks mounted to the rails like a set of roof racks?
    Any info would be appreciated.

    Steve

From the posts on here, they mount directly to the roof. Roof rail removals have been posted here as well as on youtube.

If removing the roof rails, make sure you crack both bolts loose before removing either one of them for each of the mounting points.

      Thanks amts,

Looks like its pretty easy going once the rails are off!

Fitted the flat rack last night. Found a video to show how to un-clip covers on roof rails to remove them. Worked great!
The rack fits perfect and no issues at all. Only thing is you need 2 people to lift it on. Looks great too!

...or if your mate doesn't show up (happened to me) you put the cardboard box that the rack comes in on your roof to protect the paint, manhandle the rack up onto the box, then slide the box out leaving the rack resting on the mounting feet. Surprisingly easy to do.

Also if you want to prevent water getting into your roof via the mounting bolt holes you are going to have to use a sealant (sikaflex 227). The Toyota mounting feet that you remove are designed with large flat mating surfaces that are "glued" together with a sealant, and the bolts into the roof pass through circular holes with large surfaces to mate the rubber washer on the bolt heads. Everything is designed to fit, and keep water out.

The Kings mounting feet are more generic by design. They dont fit as snuggly around the bolt holes in the roof and the mounting bolts pass through oblong holes in the feet. Oblong holes are great for adjustment BUT it means that you can't expect a water tight seal from the circular washers. Lots of sealant required to fill around the mounting bolts to slow down water ingress (IMHO).

He did turn up so it was all good.
I was wondering about the whole waterproofing. Did you apply sealant before or after fitting the feet?

Does it make any wind noise?

I did both. Before each foot went on i applied a circular bead of sealant around each bolt hole that was squished down as the foot went on. I also filled into the oblong slot, around each bolt after they were bolted down. Was a bit fiddly getting access from what i remember.

I was guided by the Toyota components that i removed. I examined them to see where/how they made seals and tried to emulate that.

Re: Wind noise, it was definitely noticeable in the first few weeks. Now i don't notice it, although im sure the same sound remains. Interestingly it does get a bit noisy in a crosswind though. In total i have no issue with wind noise of the Kings flat rack.

For those researching this product; note that the packaging is marked "Tigerz11" rather than "Kings"

I agree with the wind noise. I did notice some noise to start with, however after a while I don't even notice anything. And now I think about it, after fitting a light bar to the front and a shade to the side, I still don't notice anything.

Agree with Simon, pay particular attention to sealing up around the bolt holes, I learnt the hard way!
