  • New owner of a broken Prado... Help with sump removal

    Hi all! I've jus bought a broken Prado, 2006 3.0 D4D with 1KD engine. I think it has a big end gone, I have the head off (I can move number one piston vertically a few mm so deffo problem there), and now I just need to get in underneath to get at the con rod bolts. Can you take the main sump off with the motor still in the car? I've got the little sump off, and seems like there might be enough space, but the engine might need lifting a couple of inches. Anyone done it?

    I believe you need to lift engine to remove the second sump, good luck!

      I imagine you'd have to get the diff out of the way first in order to drop the sump.
      Bit of a mission, prop shaft and drive shafts out, not to mention HEAVY.
      Easier to pull the engine, you may find the crank needs a re-grind.

        Ah, thanks all! I got all the bolts out last night but there's deffo not enough clearance. Will have to lift it up in the bay at least, and if I get to that stage, prob as well hoisting out altogether.

        Will report back on the crank...

            Yep, it was knocking bad haha. Not sure on en engine actually, I've not looked. I can do a motor rebuild myself, so if it comes to hoisting it in and out anyway, I'll just do a recon rather than buy another engine.

            Just scanned the Bay, looks like about £2k for a recon lump.

              if your doing your self do a write up and take pics

              on another note
              can you have a look and see what your front & rear axle maximum weights are please
              also your towing weights
              would be good to get the info from the European Prado's

                Ha, will do! Got lots of pics on the phone so I remember what goes where.

                Here's the page from the owner's manual, is this what you were asking about? I can check the plate on the car too.

                  now does your car have the EGR unit on the side of the engine?

                  and what turbo is on your engine ??

                    Yep, I have the water cooled EGR thingy and throttle body type section. Not sure on the turbo, but it's coming off in the next day or so so I'll look then ha!
