  • Very different service costs from Toyota

My 2014 Prado is now out of capped price service and I called the dealer up for the price on the 70k service (basically oil change only) the dealer quoted $395 which I thought was a little outrageous. I decided to do some google research and I came across on the Toyota Australia website service costs www.toyota.com.au/owners/service/service-pricing and the price was significantly less at $245. WTF?

I called the same dealer up again and questioned it and they said if I brought in a copy of the printout from the website they would honor the price.

When I picked the car up I tried to get more information regarding about the deal but no one really knew or would say how it works. I did overhear someone say a code needs to be entered into the system before they generate an invoice.

There are a few conditions like you need to the the original owner and you MUST take a copy of the printout along when dropping in the car, and I don't know if this works at all dealers.

I hope this saves a few people some cash.

Thanks for pointing this out, it gives me another chance to have a moan and grizzle.
I would be surprised if dealers do not already know this but of course rely on people not being as diligent as you and being prepared to pay the first quoted rip off price.
I think the capped servicing scheme can be ridiculous, it is OK if your vehicle does an average number of K's but in my case as I am overseas for a least 6 months a year I am forced to have it serviced when not necessary. I have driven home from a 6 month service, stood the Prado on axle stands in the garage until my return only to find it is then due for the next service having not been used at all. I dare not omit this service as I do not trust Toyota to honour the warranty if it is not carried out.
When I raised this issue on the owners forum I was quickly shouted down and informed that "oils go off" I wonder if they "go off" when a vehicle is in the show room?

      Hi John
I service mine by the Kilometers, The oil does not go off sitting around. It is just outrageous expense to charge us more. I work on the theory that it fails before time you would have a chance to push it further. If it takes 9 months to do 10,000kms, it is still only 10,000 kms.
I had trouble just before warranty (a couple of weeks) run out on our Prado, alternator replaced under warranty, It had only just had its 30,000 kms service done with 28,000 on the clock, a couple of weeks before.
      Cheers
      Charlie
