  • Battery drain problem

So a few months after I bought my 150 series the battery went flat for no apparent reason (no lights or anything like that left on). Jump started it then drove a good 400km that weekend, left it overnight and it died again.

Following this I bought a new battery as the indicator on the battery was saying it was dead, this seemed to do the trick until a few days ago when I didn't drive the car for 8 days, went to start it and the battery was flat again.

Took it to an auto-electrician, he couldn't find anything draining that battery and he said the alternator is fine. He attempted to charge the new battery and said it wasn't getting fully charged. He recommended I take the battery back to where I bought it and have it replaced.

Has anyone else had this problem? Seems odd that a brand new battery is doing this. To me the fact that two batteries have gone flat for no apparent reason it seems like something would be causing this, have no idea what though. On a side note my cruise control isn't working, perhaps this is related?

Hi Frizzy, how much driving had you done in the week or so, prior to leaving it unused for 8 days?

Not a lot. I drove it on a Saturday for about 2 hours and then left it until the next Sunday and that is when I went to start it and the battery was flat.

It generally only gets driven on the weekend, doesn't get used during the week.

Hi Frizzy, battery's do come faulty from factory. It a good idea to replace with another one. Than see what happen. If it happen again than look for another reason. Cheers

I bought the car secondhand. The battery went flat a few months after I bought it then I replaced it with a new battery and it did the same thing about a month later. Thanks

Hi again Frazzy and it doesn’t sound like there is anything wrong with your battery, is sounds like you are not driving enough to charge the battery.

Your small amount of driving is most likely slowly killing your battery but there is a fix.

If you have a battery charger, try charging the battery over night, every night for a few days and see if the battery comes back to life.

The best way to charge the battery to recover it, is charge all night then turn the charger off during the day and then charge at night again.

This type of charging will charge the battery each time you turn the charger on, and once the battery is fully charged, the charger will SLOWLY recondition your battery while in float mode.

If this works, another option is to connect a small solar panel to your cranking battery when the vehicle is not in use and the solar panel will automatically turn on and off with the sun.

Ok than. Its long process to find out whats making it flat. To start with check the battery volt with multimeter. Check after 30 minutes when you lock the car but leave the bonnet open Than check in the morning. Don't unlock it. Check the volt again. If there is any difference in volts than something is there. If it doesn't than how many km you do per day. If less buy a battery charger to maintain the battery charge and it will increase the battery life.

If cruise control not working than check the for the blown bulb and brake switch.

Any aftermarket accessories. Remove the connection or their fuse than check the volt.

If these things doesn't work than you have to remove the every single fuse to check for the drop voltage. Two person job one will look at multi meter n other will remove the fuse one n put it back all one by one. May be a blown fuse.

If this doesn't work than you need to look for the live wire somewhere in car with 12v electrical circuit tester. If you find it fix it. May be wire is twisted/ bend under trim and touching chassis and causing battery drainage.

              Hope this helps.
              Cheers

The car has a battery isolator fitted as it is an ex mine spec. Would switching the isolator on to cut the earth to the battery when its not being used often be enough to preserve the battery?

Hi Skprado, Frazzy’s problem is a simple case of sulphating.

All standard lead acid batteries, be it wet cell or AGMs, will sulphate if they are left for more than 24 hours, but wet cell batteries sulphate quicker than AGMs.

If you have a work vehicle that is not driven over the weekend, by Monday, suppuration will have commenced, but as soon as you start your motor and the alternator applies a voltage to the battery, the little bit of sulphration that would occur over the weekend will quickly be reversed.

Frazzy’s problem is that the long periods between drives is allow for quite a large amount of sulphation to buildup before he drives again.

His once a week long drive will reverse a small portion of the effects of the sulphration, but one long drive every so often can not totally reverse the effects.

As suggested above, a small ( 5w to 10w ) solar panel without a regulator, will both charge and keep a cranking battery in very good condition, between drives.

Agree with you drivesafe. Frazzy if you dont need battery isolater just remove it or do as you mentioned or use solar panel as drivesafe mentioned. Thats will definitely solve the issue. Cheers

Ok thanks for your advice drivesafe and skprado.

Given that an auto elec couldn't find anything draining it then it does seem that the battery drain is due to it not being driven enough.

Any recommendations on solar panels and are they hard to fit?

Hi Frizzy, if you get a 5w to 10w solar panel, you do not need a solar regulator and the panel can be connected directly to the battery.

This could be done by mounting the solar panel on your garage roof and then running some twin cable to some form of plug setup say sticking through your grill.

If you use the solar panel setup, make sure the cable running from the panel to your battery is long enough to drape over your driver's door mirror.

This will then remind you that you have the solar panel connected and will save you from driving down the road with your solar panel following you.
