  • New or used?

I'm keen to get into a Prado, and although I was intending to buy used, it seems to me that buying new makes more sense. I'd be really grateful if someone could offer some advice.

If I was buying new, I'd get a GX (I only want 5 seats), so let's say that'll cost me about $58K on the road. (I know there is a 2018 model coming out soon, so I'd wait for that.)

If I was buying used, I'd get a GXL (because 5 seat GX is rare) around 3 years old with 60-80K on the clock. Looking around on carsales.com.au, and assuming a small discount, let's say that would cost me around $45K-$50K on the road.

So we're talking a $8K-$13K saving buying a used GXL versus a new GX.

Buying used means: potential issues, no warranty, tyres with wear, no capped priced services, closer to major $$$ services, older engine and tech.

    What would you do?

Oh yeh, I should have explained why I compared a new GX against a used GXL -- that sounds rigged doesn't it .

The thing is, I'm really happy with a GX, but used GXs with 5 seats are very rare, and the ones that come up have heaps of K's and they look like ex-rentals to me. This is in Adelaide.

Grinbot, you may want to consider a new GX in a run-out model when the facelift comes out.
In my experience I purchased a new 150 GX auto 3.0lt 5 seater (July 15) when in runout for $50300 D/A as the 2.8 models was about to be released.
Go with the new if the $ are there as it gives you a fresh vehicle.
I would only go 2nd hand if low kms (sub $40km) and lots of ARB type accessaries.
          Good luck

Thanks Rags, that is a good point. I think you got a great deal, and I'd love a run-out deal like that myself. Hopefully there are some 5-seater GXs in stock to run out late this year.

As the owner of a 2.8 GX with 5 seats, I have to agree that they are rare. When i got mine in Feb. 2016 there were none in the country [ other than those on order for mining companies]. It took until the end of June 2016 for it to arrive on my doorstep. Ask around online to various dealers to see if there is any stock or if it has to be ordered in your choice of colour and allow about 3-4 months for it to arrive. The 5 seat setup is far superior to the 7 seats if you don't need the 7 seats. I ordered the tow bar as well as the reverse sensors and got it on the road for just over $56K in June last year. Price rise since then. I also picked up some second hand sidesteps cheap.

I looked at various 2.8 used/demo models but it was better value to buy new. The GXL suited me overall but I wish it had a 5 seat option to provide better boot space and reduce weight. I might get a conversion or drawers done, but it all seems a waste when 5 seats from the start would be better. Given the number of GXLs or VXs purchased for towing, touring or off-road work for 2 to 5 people (rather than school buses) it seems crazy not to have this simple option (rather than 4 optional shades of white!)

What ever the GXL had in addition to the GX didn't interest me, not sure what they were. Money saved went into accessaries like side rails that don't bend. When looking around at the options instead of the 5 seat prado it was interesting, every wagon except for the Prado had 7 seats. The Izuzu MUX would be a perfect vehicle for 5 seater and would appeal to the fleet market but they don't do one either.

Yeh, I don't understand why Toyota doesn't offer a 5 seat option in the GXL. The extra two seats cost 120 Kg. We also looked at the MUX, but yeh, no 5 seater, and the cargo area is smaller.

We did the same sums 2 years ago. Started looking at late model 120, then not much $$ to a early 150, then they did the run-outs on the 3.0L so we ended up with a new one of them in gxl. Was the first new car we have ever bought but they hold resale really well.

We use the extra seats often so a gx wasn't an option (I would have loved to leave drawers in all the time). Rear air and wider tyres are the main things gxl has over the gx that I can recall.

                      Cheers,
                      Nova

Edit - I would have loved to be able to option some of the vx/Kakadu gear onto a gx or gxl. KDSS, airbag suspension, off-road traction controls, factory rear diff lock come to mind

Tyre size is the same in the 2014 facelift models, the GX has rear air vents in the rear of the console box, but not overhead air or climate control, The dog doesn't mind the air in the back seat but prefers the window open.

The extra back seats in the GXL don't weigh 120kg. That weight must include the extra rear ac unit not sure what else adds weight.

Hi there. Yep I was in the same boat as you. I'm from Adelaide and wanted a GX 5 seater but manual. Rare as hens teeth. Took me 6 months but got a 2010 GX (bought in 2013) for $32K. It came from NT and was in excellent condition with ARB bull bar and 86,000 km on it. I think is was a rental but got RAA to check it out and it was fine. Also came with a tow bar. Now done 165,000 and hasn't missed a beat. Just keep looking.... I got mine from Manheim Auctions at Wingfield and they were great. Was advertised on Car sales on the Friday and I bought it on the Sat.. Hope this helps

Good advice if a GX in stock at time, we ended up buying a new prado the drive away deal and service pricing for 3 years won me over.

Only other thing is the 2,8 seems a bit hit and miss maybe stick with a used 3L for peace of mind
