HI everyone, I'm looking for some help to diagnose a drivetrain noise.
https://youtu.be/wrwjKdXtAYE
Stats:
2012 KDJ150R Toyota Landcruiser Prado making noise
1KDFTV engine, 5 speed Auto gearbox.
Diff breathers installed by previous owner
This noise only happens under certain conditions:
- when load is being applied through the drive train on the flat (hard acceleration) or
- when driving up hills
The noise is rotational and appears to squeak approximately twice
per tyre rotation (2:1 squeaks:turns)
The noise sounds like a squeak but is hard to describe. Either rubber on steel, or a thin gauge steel being rubbed against a more solid metal. It does not appear to be a clearance issue between the brake disc cover and the wheel.
Origin
I first heard the noise following a river crossing in the high country at the bottom of a steep descent (Blue Rag Track, for those that can picture it). Having said that, I was not riding the brakes during the descent, relying on the compression instead. I don't remember how long I gave the brakes to cool before crossing.
The noise started immediately on the (steep) ascent.
The noise persisted on the 100-odd k return journey up the same track, but had gone completely by the end of the 100 kays to camp. It went quiet for about 1000 km then came back driving up the (steep) driveway one day. It has remained for 500 km and now makes the noise under heavy acceleration on the flat as well.
Can't diagnose it!
My ideas are either:
- warped discs? (but they show no signs of increased wear, excessive heat, shudder under light or heavy braking or loss of braking power)
- CV issues? (although if it was CV the rotation noise would be 1 per turn I guess?
- Gearbox?
-Transfer?
-Diff?
-Something else completely?
Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers
