  • Rear fridge slider - better tie down

    Hi All,

We have an ARB fridge, and I have made up a false floor style platform for our 150 (along the lines of others described in this forum) using plywood and tied down using the existing tie down points (ie. removing the tie downs and placing M6 bolts through).

Since we need one of our rear seats while touring I have made it L-shaped to allow the LHS seat to be used. This also means only 3 of the 4 tie downs can be used.

It has worked well enough, but now I've decided to make the fridge easier to access by installing a sliding platform.

My main worry is that I don't think the tie downs are sufficient. With the fridge slid out there will be a lot of cantilever force and I am worried that the platform will tip up, or maybe the whole seat will tip up.

Ideally I want to bolt down a bracket in the back, anchoring somewhere in between the 2nd and 3rd row seats. But I have not found a suitable bolt hole.

As I mentioned I need to retain the rear seats, and also the whole thing needs to come out between trips as it is also our main family car.

Has anyone solved this problem yet? If so what did you bolt your fridge slide / false floor down to?

I have searched and found a few references to various ideas (eg. using the rear hand holds?) but no pictures and could not visualize how it would work.

    Thanks in advance

    Thinking out loud....

What about some steel flat bar, in a V-Shape from the rear right corner of the platform up to both bolts holding the grab handles?

It would have to be curved outwards though as the grab handle would be above the fridge I would think.
    Cheers
    Micheal.

How about utilising the child seat anchors?

        Thanks Guys

I have been toying with this as an idea, although getting the shape right will be awkward (and maybe beyond my fabrication skills!). Also it will need to be really stiff because as you say it will be above the platform so the force will be compressive rather than tensile.

How about utilising the child seat anchors?
Might also be a possibility. How to attach to them though? They are basically little bars that you clip the child harness over. D bolt around it perhaps?
The force would also be compressive but at least it would be directly up rather than at an angle.

Find an appropriate U-bolt size that can loop around the bar and attach to it an angle, flat bar, hollow section of the appropriate length so that it contacts the plywood floor to prevent it from lifting. If it is of the right length and shape, you may not need to attach it to the plywood floor.

Or, remove the plastic surround on the anchor point to see if there is a bolt attachment point.

Or, get some threaded rod, bend it like a tent peg, i.e. less than 90deg, then hook it under the bar of the anchor point, and then attach the appropriate angle, flat bar or hollow section to the threaded rod.

This is how I solved it in the end.

There are plastic covers over the sliding tracks for the middle row of seats. If you carefully lift up those covers, you will get access to the bolts that bolt the tracks down.

I made up a bracket using a length of 3mm Aluminium flat bar, bending it at one end so that it would come up at an angle towards the fridge false floor. I used an angle bracket which I bent back to a suitable angle so that one side would be flat against the false floor and the other bent down to meet the aluminium bar. I could of m6 bolts to bolt the two together.

The bracket bolts down using one of the M11 bolts that hold the middle seat row (the bolt in the middle) and the other end is screwed down to the ply false floor.

Seems to work ok. There is slightly more give than I would have liked in the false floor, in retrospect I should have used thicker ply. I might add another batten to stiffen it up if it looks like it will be a problem.

The only down side is that you can't get the plastic cover back on with this in place.

Good spot. What ply did you use?

For the false floor I think it was 9mm. I made that part some time back, before adding the fridge slide.

To make the sliding platform I used Marine Ply 12mm. If ever I re-do the floor I will use that, it seems a lot stiffer.

Harmic, are you able to post some images showing the sliding platform in place as well as with the fridge if at all possible? I am keen to install a fridge slide for my Waeco but as its my Missus's car, she wont let me take out the 3rd row seats...
