Had both several times over on several cars. Personally, I like the Thule but that's because the current one (I think) sits better on my wife car.

There is absolutely no difference in reality. They both have a 60kg (or thereabouts) limit. Both are find off-road. I'd be looking primarily at 1) What's on sale on any given day, and 2) what options you want to put on top. That may include Bike holders, Kayak holders, a basket, pod or whatever. Rola Roof Racks are also in the mix now, with heaps of accessories (had them too) and often on sale at SuperCheap.

The decision is yours! Congrats on the car - nice one.

      Hi Camjam,

      Thank you for the tips,
what about the Off road ? I dont see many people with the roof Box any particular reason for that ?

Yes. Most of the boxes are basically fibreglass or plastic and are prone to cracking where they are joined to the racks, especially on corrugations. ie not very durable. You are better off with a flat rack or basket on cross bars on your roof rails. Check out the Toyota price for the roof bars as they are often cheaper than Rhino [ who make them for Toyota.

We have the Toyota roof cross bars (iirc they are rola vertex bars, someone will probably correct me) as they were cheaper than aftermarket.

We have a rhino box/pod that we used last year on our trip to the Kimberley and it worked really well. Did 10k km and no problems with it. It wasn't perfectly dust sealed but was easier to get gear in and out of than the roof bag we had previously. Much easier to unlock it and lift one side up than undo all the straps and zips of a bag and you can reach from standing on the door sills or the rear tyre.

We drove the Tanami, bungles, Cape Leveque, and the Gibb (road out to tunnel Creek and Cape Leveque where the roughest) and had no issues. I did have a spotlight fall off on the way into the bungle bungles and did see a prado at home valley station that was missing a bull bar so the roads were not exactly smooth.

          Cheers,
          Nova

I use an old Rola 360 L roof pod offroad, mostly mounted to an ARB flat rack, but sometimes on two cross bars (like when i go to Fraser/Morton Island).

The pod has seen Cape York, Simpson, Ooodnadatta, Vic High Country etc. The locking mechanism is (was) stuffed, so i use a long strap around it. The only damage to it was coming back from a friend with a hole in the side (i think he drove it into a tree). I suspect the flat rack support underneath takes care of any stresses. I try to keep it light, but tents, tarps, holes, maxtraxs, shovels... it adds up quickly.

As has been said, its very handing for keeping stuff dry and fast to get in and out of. The Prado 150 on Your4x4 ran a roof pod on a Rhino platform if your looking for ideas.

For roof racks, Rhino looks to be the winner in terms of accessories. But then again, it might not be relevant if you don't need to fit all those accessories. However, Rhino gear is well made and easy to customise.

As for roof box vs open style racks (cage, platform, etc), I went down this path and for my usage, the Pioneer platform offers the best versatility. I just need to weatherproof the luggage and all is well. I have travelled with a roof box overseas and the issue I had was making the luggage fit into the shape of the roof box. On some occasions, we had to resort to putting items into soft bags in order to utilise the volume. Roof boxes are great however in terms of aerodynamics. But the Prado is a box on wheels anyway.

Personally I went the BackBone pioneer system (and my wife's Volvo has a Thule box). I like the platform/ basket or whatever thing you buy as it offers more flexibility. I have a Turbo Tent that is 1.2M long - so I want that to go on the roof or it takes up too much room in the car. Also, a jerry can can go up there in the nice clear air with diesel, as well as a gas bottle. I can also put my 2nd spare up there... all these things you'd find hard to put in a pod. If for whatever reason I needed on, then I would use my space-case that also fits up there (for the light but bulky stuff like sleeping bags).

There seem to be a few who've travelled successfully with the pods, so it's up to you. However, if that pod breaks or cracks open - where are you going to put the stuff that's in it? With a basket/ platform - you just strap it down tighter or tie more knots if a joint (say on my space case) breaks...
