HELP: Telescopic Steering Adjustment not working on VX (motor hums but no movement)

On startup of the VX & Kakadu the steering column shifts out into position and retires when you turn the car off. However my VX stopped working about a week ago and you can hear a motor humming for about 30 seconds like it is trying, but nothing moves. Using the adjuster on the side of the column, it moves up and down but not in and out.

Has anyone else experienced this?? or know what might be wrong? I had an auto electrician at work have a quick look and he seems to think you need to buy a whole new steering column from Toyota for $2,500!

At this stage I have it booked into Toyota later next week...

Being a VX owner, I can attest that it'll either be something simple (eg one of the gears has stripped itself), or something expensive (aka new steering column). Best bet would be to pull it apart and have a look yourself, I can't remember if the adjustment module on the 150's are a sealed unit or not.
