  • Petrol Vs Diesel Economy

    Hi ,
I've been using 2004 Prado GXL Dual Fuel for almost 10 years and I'm planing to sell it soon.
And of course I'm going to buy a Prado again. My current Prado it really economical ( gas full tank 65L can go 400Km easy ).
But I can't find latest Prado models with Dual fuel option.

So Please advice me diesel or Petrol is economical. Towing is very minimum ( may be once a year or zero )
So towing is not a decision making factor for me.

I'm looking for 2012 or later models.

I know you have discussed this topic before. But couldn't find any discussion without talking about towing thing.

So if I conclude my requirement again.
    2012 or latest Prado
    Never Tow
    Diesel or Petrol Economical
I've driving a lot ( may be over 1000km per week , including inter estate )

    Cheers.
    Cham

You must be shy Cham! - 6 years for your first post has to be a record!

I would suggest petrol may be the go if you're running lost of interstate driving. Around town/city driving the Diesel returns much better economy but if you're not driving in traffic, not towing, and running highway speeds regularly then the economy difference closes right up.
    Cheers
    Micheal.

In most real world conditions the petrol will use about 30% more fuel than the diesel. Lots of threads on this. Get what floats your boat but on my figures you need to do in excess of 100000km to be in front with the diesel allowing for the extra maintenance of injectors at 100000-120000 km for the diesel BUT if you are doing lots of country kms 9 l/100 sure sounds better than 12 l/100 km when you are filling up once or twice a week.

What do your numbers come out with with the later d4ds with full DLC injectors supposedly giving 240,000km service life?

I have not seen any revised figures with double the injector life?

        Cheers

Deduct approximate $3000 from your servicing costs to 120000????

I was more getting at with these revised numbers (-$3000) where is the break even point in terms of kays?

              With the following parameters
              Petrol @ $1.05/L consuming 12L/100km
              Diesel @ $1.15/L consuming 9L/100km
              Breakeven is 70,000km

What about buying a 150 and fitting LPG? Breakeven for the install (max $4k) would be about 75,000 kms. I have a Prins VII system on my FJ, runs great; average about 14-15 L/100 LPG.

I have a 120 V6 VX auto. For a couple of years I would drive it to work (Sydney) and jump into a 150 D4D, fitted out with ranks and equipment. Poodling around town, stop, start, lots of short trips, the D4D would get worse fuel economy than my V6. I was really surprised. The only time it really came into its own was on long trips and when towing. Very interesting results from a real world comparison.

Can I ask why you want to get shot of the 120?

I am happy with my 2.8 since my touring adventures (and perhaps towing) will increase. Not only is economy and range better, but the diesel torque & power bands seem to suit off-road (and I presume towing) better. However for city work and short local runs I would prefer the V6 for its performance and also how it runs from when cold. Too much city work is not ideal for a DPF as often discussed. I accept than overall long term running costs might not be that much different.
