  • First time Buying a Prado

So we are going to spend 56-60K on a Prado.

I found one on carsales, with 78000 ks, so is that alot for a toyota prado kakadu or should I just end up getting a near new VX 2014-2017 VX

I spoke to the dealer and they have agreed to lower the price to 58000$

Pictures- The year is 2014 BTW

Yep it's a rip. You can get better mileage and cheaper ones readily without looking too hard.

$58k for a 2014 Kakadu that has done 78k is pretty reasonable.

I think 2 years ago I sold my 2012 Kakadu which included an alloy bull bar and was Pearl White, with 18,000km on it, for $60,000.

About Prados - the Kinetic suspension makes improving the suspension much more difficult. The VX and Kakadu had the Kinetic suspension. According to suspension houses installers (I spoke to many) a standard Prado with a high quality upgrade will ride better than a Kinetic vehicle anyway.

The rear suspension on the Kakadu troubled me. Its cylinders for its self levelling back there, are tiny. They are something to go wrong IMO.

The thing I hated about the GXL Prado, was the appalling driver's seat. That seat needs to be in its lowest position, and if not, IMO you will suffer from a lack of lower back support. My 90 series (bought new and I still have it) has far, far, far superior seats to a GXL seat circa 2015 which was when I was testing them.

If one is to go off road, then IMO a GX / GXL makes a lot of sense, as long as you upgrade the suspension and I would include new front seats!! Used GXLs at good value and with low mileages cost more than new GXLs when I was looking! I found a good value Kakadu with low mileage so I bought that. I later sold it (because I bought a camper trailer caravan that weighed 2400kg. IMO that was too much for the Prado (I know they can do it but IMO its not so much fun with them). But I sold the Kakadu for a profit after a year of ownership and doing only 9,000km. So a well bought Kakadu may not pose a financial risk, as long as you the mileage is low. But when the mileage becomes high ... who knows, they may depreciate more than a GXL. Incidentally I much prefer the 90 series to drive - its not luxo like a 150, but its so much lighter and more direct, I just enjoyed it much more. I've still got the 90 series too.

A budget of about $62k should get you a new 2.8 GXL auto either from stock or factory ordered (plus any costs for tow bar etc). The 2018 face lift might soon cause some good offers on stock models. A big benefit of buying new is that you can pick 5 or 6 (or more) dealers to haggle with. This is hard if looking at one specific used car. An issue with any used 4WD is 'how' it has been used - anything from short city runs (in many ways not ideal) to heavy off-road towing. Might still be a good buy but people vary in their use of a Prado (and modifications) more than say a Mazda3.

Is 79000 a lot from a Prado kakadu, I have spoken to the dealer and he says that it was used as a execuetive vehicle with no towing. But there is a towbar installed.

And I will use the car mostly for going to and from work, with light dirt track offroading and visiting National Parks

Don`t try to change my decision, I have wanted a prado for a long time.

Not trying to change your decision. They're giving you feedback based on experience, and there's a lot of Prado experience here, trust me. We're just saying the price sounds too high for that age and km's and things to be wary of with a Kadadu/VX. You're money. Do what you want with it. We're just helping you make an informed decision.
2007 GXL V6 - ARB Bullbar with LED lights, snorkel, extractors, 2 1/4" dual exhaust, K&N filter, dimpled/slotted rotors, headrest dvd players, Ebay Satnav/reverse camera, GME 3100TX, Tigerz11 Side awning on custom brackets with Maxtrax mounts, 300W Invertor, ARB Underbody protection, Lightbar and STZ 265/70 tyres.
Wish list in order I'll get them: Sliders, 2" lift, E-locker, Winch bar with winch.

So should I go for it, If I spend an extra 3K i can get a 2013 kakadu with 40K kilometres, the problem is that, the dealer told me that there is 3K worth of registration and other costs. When driving a ACT car in NSW

As the happy owner of a 2.8 2015 GXL, given my time over I would buy a new GX and spent the $$$$ saved on a suspension upgrade and a few other goodies.

.... and that is just what I did. The car is all set up for anywhere in Aus. for less than the cost of a new GXL.

How effective is MTS/ Auto levelling suspension,Crawl Control, Multi Terrain monitor and HDC, I really don`t want to miss out on those extra options, If I go for a VX or even a brand new GXL
