  • Suspension lift combination question

    Hi all,
I've recently joined the forum after buying a 2004 petrol model last weekend and have been scouring the pages trying to work out product codes/model numbers etc for a 2" lift which is the 1st mod I want to do to my stock car (steel bulbar, winch & dual battery under the hood to also be done within the next 3-4 weeks)

After reading many posts and also checking the suspension database I'm hoping I have the correct product codes so I can start sourcing them from somewhere.

I'm happy to go with the Bilstein shocks but undecided on either the Kings or Dobinson coils (whatever works out to be the better deal).

The car will be my daily drive vehicle but weekends and camping trips away will be loaded up with the missus and 4 kids (aged 5-10) at times towing a caged box trailer or small boat (under 1 tonne total weight) or the car loaded to the brim inside and on the roof racks. Will be doing some weekend offroad / camping trips with the family but nothing too extreme.

First decent trip away will be Fraser Island in October.

Have I got the correct product item numbers below?

    Front strut Bilstein BE5-D563
    Front coil King KTFR-101HD
    Front coil Dobinson C59-302

    Rear strut Bilstein 24-217897
    Rear coil King KTRR-102HD
    Rear coil Dobinson C59-327

    Thanks in advance

As a daily driver, what is the weight carried at the rear?

Hi AMTS, daily is a 15km commute to work and back round trip (office worker so no tools etc) with just one of the rear seats installed for the school pick up.

I've just spoken to a Dobinsons supplier and they recommended me the BE5-A713 shock for the rear (goes against what I've read on here lately?) for my set up.

Keen to get something within the week.

      Thanks

        Hey marty,

The HD coil is 800lb/in, and not optimal for the valving on the D563. Better option for the 120 and your front end weight is the C59-352. The C59-327 will work best with the 24-217897, again that HD coil rate is too stiff for the rear.

I would not engage again with whoever suggests 713 Bilsteins.

Give John at Zordos Suspension a call, he'll sort you out with a great Bilstein/Dobinsons package.

          Thanks Mark.
They seemed like a reputable shop.
They reckoned that the 24-217897 would end up in too hard a ride for my set up. Is it a much stiffer shock?

            Hey Marty,

The 713 is a copy of the OEM rear valving, and it is valved for a low rate OEM spec coil. It is hopelessly short in lifted geometry and you'll end up with 50-60mm droop in the rear at a typical 2" lift. Anyone suggesting a 713 is a better shock to use than a 24-217897 should not be selling suspension.

The valving in the 24-217897 is optimal for the solid axle rear in the Prado, it is a great touring open length, and it rides superbly on 270lb/in C59-327 coils.

There is nowhere near enough rebound valving in a 713 compared to a 24-217897. The majority of kinematic control of the Prado comes from the rebound valving in the rear shocks, they are the most important suspension component in the Prado. Get this wrong and you'll turn the Prado into a pogo stick. Anyone who has driven a packed up Prado in the bush on 713 shocks on mismatched high rate coils knows all about the notorious pogo stick dynamics.

Call John and you can avoid a lot of pain and hassle!

I've had the 713 in mine and the pogo stick theory is real! I'd take Whitey's suggestion and at least give Zordo's a call to have a chat
The other option you have is to have a look at the Ironman suspension group buy that Whitey is running.
