  • BFG KO2 Tyre Issue - Rubber Delaminating?

    Hi all,

Went for a trip to the shops yesterday and noticed what I thought was a scrape on the left front passenger tyre. On closer inspection I noticed that almost all the way around the tyre where the thin raised ridge is above the writing the rubber is peeling back. When I pull the peeled area back a bit I can see the white rubber that they use for the raised white lettering behind this peeling layer.

Now I am of course heading back to the tyre shop to have them inspected but as luck would have it the tyres are exactly 1 year & 2 months old, technically that puts them out of warranty. Sorry I don't have a pic, will try and get one in the morning as it's dark and raining outside now.

A bit stumped as to how this occurred, have not been 4WDing in ages as I'm home recovering from surgery. Just had them inspected and rotated by the tyre shop not all that long ago.

They may be out of manufacturers warranty however I personally would go back to them asking for them to consider replacing due to the legislative powers of Australian consumer law, in particular statutory warranty. See here..... https://www.accc.gov.au/system/files...20business.pdf

Actually according to the BFG Australia website, it's 6 years.

Going in today to have the tyres inspected, go from there.

Nope, not me. Haven't been overseas since late last year.

Some pics to show the problem. The last is just what it looks like viewed from the side, the rest are where I have peeled back the rubber to show what is happening. 3 different spots on the tyre at least.

Update: My tyre shop are organising for a BFG rep to come out & inspect the tyre. They say it's only superficial but should not be happening & BFG need to honour the warranty. I'm taking it back on Monday so they can swap the tyre out with my spare ready for the BFG rep to inspect. Looks like I won't have too much trouble pursuing a claim, the BFG Aus warranty is 6 years or the original tread life, mine have heaps of tread left.

Any chance this is from the left side of car?

Without sounding narky it does look a lot like gutter rash. Ive seen BFG that look exactly like that after a gutter rub.

Tyres were made in the USA, all made in week 13 or 14 2016.

                    Yes, left front.

All good, Michelin have agreed to replace it so my supplier has ordered in another, will text me to come in when it arrives. I didn't even have to go back so they could take the tyre off for the Michelin rep to inspect it. Nice to see a company stand by it's product and a supplier so happy to assist.

Tyre has been replaced under warranty today. Great service from Jax Prahran and Michelin too, all done with minimum fuss and delay. Replacement tyre has date code 5016 so it's not old stock either.

I have noticed a problem with my BFGoodrich KO2 tyres purchased in March last year.

After inspection the other day I noticed the centre area of the tread on 3 of my tyres is starting to crack/split.
At the moment the splits are not very deep possibly 2mm.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Unfortunately I am unable to post a picture {photobucket doesn’t seem to work now) but after investigating a little deeper I managed to find some images on the net with people in the states having the same problem as I have.

The rep is going to inspect them this week so I am hoping for a positive outcome.

Not something I expected to happen after such favourable reviews.

Seen them delaminates so many times. I'm not a fan of them for that reason.
