  • Trolley Jack Point at Front

    Hi,
I'm looking to buy a trolley jack to make lifting my car quicker and easier when I need to get under it to work.

I've seen workshops lift the rear of my car from the rear diff housing. Can the same be done for the front?

I'm a bit concerned about the ability of a trolley jack with 460mm lift t be able to lift from the chassis and get the wheels off the ground.

I was looking at a 2T jack from SCA or Tradetools. There are 3T options but they're too heavy to handle when I have to pick it to pack away.

    Thanks,

I use a 2T alloy race Jack. Your only lifting one end. It will be fine.

        I noticed this one, http://www.armstrongonline.com.au/al...k-2-000kg.html

Looks identical to the Bahco available at Totals Tools for around $370.00 which I can highly recommend, I have two and they have seen quite a bit of work.

That sounds like mine. Had it for years.

Currently, it will jack up ok, but on release it won't drop all the way down. It stops release just before the jack separates from the vehicle.

It's like the valving has some sort of fault.

            How do I repair it?

                      Hey gxl_d4d,

                      This is the best deal going around right now, get yourself down to Hare and Forbes in Archerfield;

You won't find a better jack for this money I reckon, twin pump, and uses a proper uni, meaning you can do nice controlled slow releases onto jack stands. Whopping 520mm height capacity.

When jacking from the front, jack underneath the front chassis cross member!

Regardless of the jack used, always support the vehicle on axle/chassis stands rated to handle to weight before doing any work under.

I've got a 2T rated Supercheap one that's serviced me very well and has been given a serious work out during its time as I service relative's cars at home to save them money. Got it on a half price special for $99 a fair while back. I wouldn't worry about a 3T one as they're heavy as hell if you need to lift it and carry it anywhere. Mine just stays on the garage floor underneath where my rear diff is when the car is parked.

Never ever work under the car when it's only supported by the Jack. Don't trust it in that regard. Lift the car and then use a support stand(s) to either take the full weight or share the weight 50/50 with the Jack.

My car is lifted a tad too high for the Jack, so I keep two square offcuts of pine fence paling on the Jack cup to be able to lift one of my front tyre's off the ground.
I wouldn't like to bet that your front diff housing is strong enough to support the weight of the car time & time again. The front trolley Jack lift point is on the outside edge of the cross member behind it. Check your car manual and it will show this.

With trolley jacks and vehicle support stands I always like to put a square piece of off cut of timber or two between them and the metal of the car to evenly distribute the weight. Pine/hardwood, it doesn't matter.

It wouldn't hurt to pick up a couple of small ramped steel chocks too to put behind or in front of the tyre's when lifting one end of the the car for added safety when yanking on bolts with a breaker bar.
